 Five decades of the Fab Four and their hometown, now a thriving cultural capital. In the Beginning
Paul, John and George perform at a wedding reception in 1958, when amongst other names, the group was known as The Quarrymen.
 The Cavern Club
In February, 1961, the group played a lunchtime gig at the Cavern Club, a blues and beat club on Mathew Street, the first of 292 appearances they would make there. In this photo, taken of the group on the club's tiny stage, Pete Best plays drums. He would perform with the group until 1962, when he was replaced by Ringo Starr.
 Hot Spot
As the Beatles rose to international stardom, the fortunes of the Cavern Club followed. In the decade after the Beatles last performed there (August, 1963), the club welcomed acts like The Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, The Who and Elton John.
 Prodigal Sons
By 1964, John, Paul, George and Ringo had become worldwide pop sensations. In July of that year, they returned to their hometown to attend a screening of A Hard Day's Night, where they were feted at City Hall, above, and greeted by 150,000 fans.
 In My Ears and In My Eyes
Paul and John often met at a junction in Penny Lane — the name refers to both a street and the region surrounding it — to catch a bus into the center of the city. City officials began to paint the name onto walls because signs bearing the words were the frequent target of thieves.
 I'm Looking Through You
The band's connection to the city is commemorated by a topiary sculpture set on a traffic island in front of the South Parkway Rail Station.
 Hometown Hero
Chosen by the European Union as the 2008 European Capital of Culture, Liverpool is hosting a yearlong celebration of its cultural legacy. To kick things off in January, the city staged Liverpool: The Musical a one-night-only show featuring Echo and the Bunnymen, Dave Stewart and Ringo Starr, who led a mass sing-along of "With a Little Help from My Friends."
 I'm Only Sleeping
The Hard Day's Night Hotel, opened in February, 2008, offers four-star service and two penthouses — called the Lennon & McCartney suites.
 All We Are Saying

 Retro
The original Cavern Club, shut down in 1973, was rebuilt in 1984 with many of the same bricks that had once been used in the original club. The new club layout was designed to evoke the original space as much as possible. It hosts a weeklong festival each year in August devoted to its most famous headliners.
 Throwback
The Mersey Beatles are one of the many groups that perform at International Beatles Week. Among the other groups that will perform at this year's festival, which runs from August 21 to 27 are: The Blackbirds, The Shouts, The Beatelles, The Norwegian Beatles and Instant Karma.
