Preliminary Remarks
Guns Men
1st rate 100 & upward 875 to 850 When an Admiral’s flag is hoisted onboard a
2nd rate 98 to 90 750 to 709 1st rate her complement of men is increased to

Sloops, Bombs, Fireships, Armed Ships and Store Ships are commanded by Masters and Commanders – Cutters, Schooners, Brigs, Armed Vessels, Armed Transports, Armed Store Ships and Surveying Sloops are commanded by Lieutenants – Yachts are commanded by Post Captains

Ships for receiving Stores on board are stationed at Portsmouth, Plymouth, Chatham and Sheerness and are termed Receiving Ships.
The ships in italics were taken from the enemy , and the Letters after each denoted the Power from whom taken, A signifying American, F French, S Spanish and D Dutch and the year in the last column the Year in which taken.
In the 2nd Column, the Italic Name after the Ships building are the names of the builders – in the 3rd Column the Italic Dates after ships building shew when they are expected to be completed And the Italic Capitals at the ends of the Line signify P Purchased T Taken R Retaken.
