On holding the high moral ground.
I suggest we don't. Tactically this high ground is a great thing to occupy, but after a while, you either starve yourself of truth in your high castle who no one dares to criticize, or someone else will take it from you, and then you'd be in trouble finding good life at the low moral lands.
I still reckon that high moral ground should be ceded to God. It does not mean that any organized religion may immediately take it away from Him. It means that the highest moral ground should remain abstract and/or poetic and always inspiring. It should serve as a distant target for humanity to strive for moral perfection, with an understanding that it is not achievable.
Being human is to sin is a confession of the erroneous nature of us all, which is not fixable; in this worldwide poker game with incomplete data and imperfect knowledge, all we can do is to minimize the consequences of our errors and maximize the benefit. Hate the sin, love the sinner, your fellow player; having a good time while the game is played is of paramount importance. Obtaining high moral ground should be an indirect outcome of a game well played, and it is always temporary position. Don't underestimate the value of sheer luck, which is always short-lived in a historical perspective.
