"Дойдя до Круга Фонтана, он остановился. Несколько десятков людей
стояло движущейся линией перед Храмом Варуны, самого строгого и
величественного из всех божеств. Эти люди не собирались войти в Храм, а
были приглашены на какое-то занятие, которое требовало ожидания. Он
услышал звон монет и подошел поближе.
Все двигалось мимо большой сверкающей металлической машины.
Человек бросил монету в пасть стального тигра. Машина замурлыкала. Он
нажал кнопки в виде животных и демонов. Вспышка света прошла во всю длину
Нагов, двух священных змей, огибающих прозрачный перед машины.
Принц подошел еще ближе.
Человек потянул рычаг, напоминающий рыбий хвост.
Священный голубой свет заполнил машину изнутри; змеи вспыхивали
красным; в свете и тихой музыке началась молитва, выскочило молитвенное
колесо и завертелось со страшной силой.
Лицо человека выражало блаженство. Через несколько минут машина
остановилась. Он вложил другую монету и снова потянул за рычаг, что
вызвало громкий ропот тех, кто стоял в конце линии; говорили, что это уже
седьмая его монета, что день жаркий, что другие тоже хотят принести
молитву, и почему бы ему не войти в Храм и не отдать столь большой дар
прямо в руки жрецов? Кто-то возразил, что маленькому человеку явно надо
загладить слишком многое."
