3:47 am	L’équilibre des puissances The Concert of Europe functioned effectively in no small part because its members were, broadly speaking, satisfied powers seeking to preserve, not overturn, the territorial status quo. In today’s world, Russian land grabs in Georgia and Ukraine are worrying developments, revealing the Kremlin’s readiness to violate the territorial integrity of its neighbors. So are China’s ongoing efforts to lay claim to and build military facilities on disputed islands in the South China Sea and Beijing’s violation of its pledges to respect Hong Kong’s autonomy. Nonetheless, neither Russia nor China has yet to become an implacably aggressive state committed to wholesale territorial expansion. A global concert also makes that outcome less likely by establishing a forum in which its members can make transparent their core security interests and strategic “redlines.” Nonetheless, if an aggressor state that routinely threatened other members’ interests were to emerge, it would be expelled from the group, and the remaining members of the concert would rally against it. 9:19 am	НАВАЛЬНЫЙ ПЛЮС И можно будет даже поздравить аборигенов Московии с таким выдающимся приобретением: пока Навальный, как пишут СМИ, «отбывает наказание в ИК-2 Владимирской области», его стало больше. Он стал, в частности, на целых восемь сантиметров выше. Подрос. Однако за время пути Собака могла подрасти… В самом деле, его рост до ареста был, как известно, 189 см (а по некоторым свидетельствам — даже 180). А на запощенной им в инстаграм фотографии лагерной бирки, на которой смутно виден похожий на Навального наголо обритый человек на фоне вертикальной линейки, как всегда снимают новоприбывших в лагерь зэков, — его рост по этой самой линейке явно больше 195 см. 197 где-то. Прямо чудо какое-то! То бишь, возможно, Навальный уже начал творить чудеса и после смерти будет подлежать канонизации… Впрочем, некоторые особо придирчивые и вредные обитатели соцсетей вообще сомневаются, что на этой фотографии на бирке изображен именно Навальный. И форма черепа, мол, не та, и нос курносый, тогда как у Навального он прямой и с чуть заметной горбинкой, и морщины на лбу совсем другие, покороче. Отдельные особо въедливые злопыхатели даже пишут, что при внимательном рассмотрении этого запощенного самим Навальным фото видно специальное затемнение в области глаз, наложенное с помощью фотошопа. 7:03 pm	French call to replace English with Latin as Europe's official language The Le Figaro article, penned by Sundar Ramanadane, claims Europe’s divorce from the English is complete, and says the feeling that French should be Europe’s lingua franca is hardly unique, pointing to articles by Germans that asks whether German should be the EU’s foremost language. But for Ramandane, Latin is ideal. How does one revive an ancient, largely dead language? The case of Israel’s revival of Modern Hebrew is used as proof that it’s possible. This is perceived as crucial and necessary if Europe will ever fulfil its dream of becoming more than a common market. The issue is an identity based on a common language and past, and this can never materialize in the status quo, he says. Latin, he argues, is a natural choice. This is particularly given that every shared historical political experience in Europe leads back to Latin. From the Roman Empire and Christianity, to the Renaissance and Enlightenment, Latin was present throughout it all. It’s not lacking for culture either, says Ramandane, used through nearly 2000 years of history as the only common link between European minds, leaders and scholars. He goes on to argue that it's no stranger to modern languages, having shaped them deeply. More importantly, he argues, Latin is well-suited to politics. In fact, some of the greatest orators and legal experts spoke in Latin, and one that will make it possible to train political leaders and civil servants in rhetoric and logic, much like ancient Greece and Rome. 12:49 am	Germany places entire far-right AfD under surveillance — reports The BfV is apparently unable to announce the decision officially because of an ongoing legal dispute. A court in the city of Cologne last week rejected an urgent motion by the AfD to stop the BfV from placing it under formal investigation. The party said any announcement that it was being investigated would undermine its right to fight the election on an equal footing to other political parties. In response, the BfV said it would not make any formal announcement on investigations into the AfD for the foreseeable future. The same would apply to candidates standing in elections in 2021. Його засудили до семи років ув’язнення та конфіскації половини наявного майна. Суддя Віктор Попревич 23 лютого визнав активіста винним за всіма статтями, тобто у викраденні людини за попередньою змовою осіб та незаконному зберіганні зброї. 11:54 am	Вера, счастье, патриотизм. Можно ли сказать, что Навальный в суде обратился к электорату Путина? Протоиерей Андрей Кордочкин, ключарь собора св. равноап. Марии Магдалины в Мадриде Мне кажется, что в России обсуждение происходящих событий сужено (быть может, искусственно) до обсуждения тезиса "Путин хороший - Навальный плохой" и его антитезиса "Путин плохой - Навальный хороший". Между тем, сами эти положения ничего не означают, кроме политических симпатий и антипатий тех, кто их артикулирует. Принципиально же стоит вопрос о доверии и о вере - пусть и не в религиозном смысле слова. Этот вопрос возникает едва ли не каждый день. Следует ли верить тому, что суд над Навальным беспристрастен, не имеет никакой политической составляющей, и судебная власть не руководствуется указанием исполнительной? Чему и кому люди верят? То, кем и в каких обстоятельствах сказано слово, может быть важнее, чем то, какие именно слова произнесены. В недавнем выпуске программы "Ещенепознер" Александр Дугин заявил, что настоящие политики - это те, кто готов умирать и убивать за свои идеи. Я не вполне с этим согласен: не думаю, что "настоящая" политическая жизнь должна представлять из себя поножовщину. Тем не менее, если мы вспомним "Письмо из Бирмингемской тюрьмы" Мартина Лютера Кинга, то станет ясно, что едва ли оно звучало бы столь же убедительно, если было бы написано в уютном кабинете. Люди верили Кингу не в последнюю очередь благодаря тому, что за свои слова он был готов платить свободой и жизнью. Он - пусть в более развернутой форме - задавал себе и другим тот же вопрос, на который ищет ответ Навальный: как моя вера определяет мое поведение как гражданина? Есть ли критерии добра, кроме политической пользы? Если христианство - это не просто организованная культовая система, то от этого вопроса не суждено уйти никому - ни его противникам, ни его сторонникам. Мы не знаем, даст ли история Навальному шанс разочаровать тех, кто верит ему сегодня. Но сегодняшняя евангельская проповедь из-за решетки, как говорит сам Навальный, обращена во многом к его соратникам, нецерковным и антицерковным людям, для которых он является куда большим духовным авторитетом, чем все духовное сословие, вместе взятое, а потому его исповедание веры - это больше, чем гиперссылка в политическом манифесте. В одну из смен с нами работала девочка по фамилии Ручка, довольно стремной наружности. 3:46 am	The Evolution of Alexey Navalny’s Nationalism Yevgenia Albats, a Russian investigative journalist and a close friend of the Navalny family’s, told me that she persuaded Navalny to attend the Russian March. In 2004, Albats had returned to Moscow after defending her doctoral dissertation in political science at Harvard. In the preceding four years, Putin had taken control of the media and dismantled the electoral system, effectively destroying Russian politics as it had been constituted. Older, experienced politicians were disoriented. But a crop of younger activists, who had not experienced party politics in what had been a somewhat functional electoral system, were rearing to go. Albats, who had researched grassroots organizing during her years at Harvard, started gathering the young activists in her Moscow apartment. About twenty people of different political stripes—from social democrats to libertarians to religious-rights activists—attended Tuesday-night seminars with Albats for about a year, she told me by Zoom from Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she is wrapping up a research fellowship. Albats was in her late forties and an observant Jew. Navalny, in his late twenties, was the oldest among those who gathered at her house but also the least articulate and least educated: most of the others had gone to prestigious colleges, while Navalny was a military brat with an undergraduate law degree from a decidedly second-tier school. For as long as she has known him, Albats told me, Navalny has been teaching himself how to be a politician: he taught himself public speaking; while he was under house arrest a few years back, he taught himself English. In the absence of politics, in the absence of any public conversation, little remained to form political alliances around. Putin was trafficking in nostalgia for the Soviet empire. The only alternative seemed to be broadly ethno-nationalist ideas, which also addressed a sense of humiliation—and these were emerging both on what could be roughly described as the left and vaguely designated as the right. Activists who didn’t share ethno-nationalist ideas believed that they had to form alliances with Russia’s emerging nationalist movements. The chess champion Garry Kasparov, for example, who quit the sport in 2005 to launch a political career, created a joint movement with the National-Bolshevik Party. At the time, he told me that only a united front could overthrow the Putin regime, and only after that should pro-Western liberal democrats like him hash out their differences with the ethno-nationalists. Albats recalled that it was in this context that she told Navalny that he should attend the Russian March. They went together. “I wore a giant Star of David that I made sure could be seen from a distance,” she told me. “He took a lot of shit for walking with a kike.” Their efforts to engage people in conversation failed, and after three years they gave up.
