I guess if you're reading this you;re familiar with the music dubbed the San Francisco sound. QMS are probably best known as the band that aren't best known. The Dead and the Airplane got their first. Possibly this was a combination of bad luck and bad timing - more likely it was good dope, jail and a determined attitude not to venture beyond their own back yard.
Dino Valenti's tenure in QMS was disrupted by Prison , even to the extent of missing the first two albums - positively careless. Whilst QMS carried on regardless notching up one of the era's defining albums in "Happy Trails" - in truth that LP was a one riff jam on Bo Diddley - nothing wrong with that unless you happen to groove to the idea of verse chorus and a decent middle eight. Fortunately Dino did and upon his return he proceded to churn out songs - sometimes even the same song twice and often a different set of lyrics. More crucially though he managed to piss-off most of the rest of the group. This may have simply been a lingering resentment of having their group hijacked by a pushy ex-con or simply that our Dino was a bit of a tool -talented but a tool all the same.
Inadequecies aside Dino did give QMS proper songs, structure - even of sorts a direction. But it was by then two years to late. The resulting albums are however criminally underrated just because they were judged out of time. taken in hindsight however and they are fine, fine LP's and curiously stand up well after 30+ years.
This live album therefore represents QMS after their first flowering and is probably them at their apex. What most folk would want to know is does it live up to the potential - answer yes. All the songs/jams are strong and the sound is clear and bright (of its time but very good.) Current live albums/cds tend to be airbrushed and the technology obliterates the sweat and disfunction - everything that makes gigs great. This is a great gig - and buy with confidence. I single out Truth - recorded in the studio as The Truth. Cippolina and Duncan are majesterial on guitars and simply blow - the vocals are spot on . This is perhaps surprising for a group not known for their harmony work but trust me this is an excersise in what can be done with 4 musicians and a drummer (only joking Greig Elmore is stonking on the skins too. Buy with confidence.
This is excellent value. Over 20 songs, some quite long. The sound is fine. The singer and the band are in tune and on form. Lots of variations on familiar guitar licks, alive and cooking. Inevitably there are a few boring bits, but a very small percentage.
Some regret the addition (or return) of Dino Valente to QMS. I love it, because I love Dino's voice and songs(and his solo album) and because while 'Happy Trails' was wonderful, it's not something that could be repeated infinitely. Dino gave them songs and structure which allowed stunning guitarists John Cippolina and Gary Duncan to soar. This is everything a rock band should be. When you compare them to the insipid dishwater-lite drivel that passes for rock music today
