Chairs and stools specifically designed for use in entrance halls and corridors were introduced in Britain shortly after 1700. They were particularly suitable for large, formal houses, where visitors and servants might wait in the hall. Their essential feature was a wooden seat, which could be cleaned easily.

At the top of this chair is carved the monogram MA for Marie-Antoinette, queen to Louis XVI of France. We do not know which of her palaces it comes from, although Sené supplied similar suites of chairs to her at the Château de Saint-Cloud, at Versailles and at the Tuileries. It resembles the Saint-Cloud set most closely, but where those chairs have a sphinx-head carved at the top of the arm-support, this chair has the head of the goddess Diana.

The design of the stool closely follows that of a marble seat in an unspecified location in Rome. Here the stool is made from beech wood, painted in white and grey to simulate the appearance of marble. Beech wood would have been much easier and less costly to carve than marble, and resulted in a more flexible seat which weighed less and could be moved around without difficulty.

This armchair formed part of a luxurious suite of furniture, costing £25,000, designed for the music room of the New York mansion of Henry Gurdon Marquand (1819-1902). He was a highly successful American entrepreneur, art collector and benefactor. The armchair bears Marquand's initials on the back. The suite included two settees, the pair of this armchair (Melbourne, National Gallery of Victoria), two piano stools and a piano decorated by Sir Edward Poynter (1836-1919).
