This painting started life as a fan-shaped sheet of parchment (animal skin), prepared by scoring or pleating. The sheet was stuck onto a larger sheet, which in turn was mounted down onto a thin, paper-covered copper panel.

После серебра для питья и еды, туалет из серебра был наиболее распространенным предметом и признаком роскоши и богатства в самых богатых семьях.
С 15 века он был обычным подарком для богатых невест на свадьбу, а так же на рождение ребенка. Он мог включать до 30 предметов, в том числе горшки для кремов, клея, щетки, ножи, подсвечники и зеркало. У мужчин тоже были роскошный туалетные наборы, не уступающие дамским, поскольку внимания своей внешности и одежде они уделяли не меньше. Такие туалетные наборы вручались в качестве подарка или награды и переходили по наследству, как драгоценности.

This object is part of a 26 piece toilet service. Tobias Baur was one of Augsburg’s leading makers of travelling toilet services during the seventeenth century and many of his services survive: the largest of which contains ninety-one pieces and is in the Residenzmuseum, Munich. This service was probably to be placed into a fitted drawer in a cabinet. When travelling, it would be transported in its original case. Many of the pieces are decorated with enamel miniatures of putti in landscapes.

Есть забавная картинка известного в 18 веке художника, Пьера Сюблейра, который иллюстрировал многие басни Лафонтена "для взрослых". Содержание вкратце таково: ревнивый муж, художник по профессии, перед отьездом рисует своей жене картинку с изображением осла на интимном месте, если не сотрется- значит, жена хранила верность. Но любовником у жены был тоже художник, который перерисовал картинку, но не удержался, и добавил ослу седло.

After silver for eating and drinking, toilet silver was the most common type of precious metal in most wealthy households. Between about 1640 and 1780, the toilet set was the customary gift for a wealthy bride and was also given on the birth of a child. It could comprise up to 30 items, including pots for creams, glue, patches and powder, pin cushions, brushes, snuffers, candlesticks and perhaps a silver-framed mirror. Women's toilet services often showed the wealth and status of the family. Men also had very luxurious toilet services, made from precious materials and finely worked. These could be purchased or inherited, or acquired as a gift or reward.
