Without them the leaders like Trump have no checks limiting their damage. In fact, any 3rd force, even if illegal and depraved, helps to keep the democracy running. If people had proof Hitler is a molester who also abused a family dog, it would have been possible to just smear his reputation and set the Nazis back. If some Putin is busy dealing with gray cardinals, he has no resources for a war in Ukraine. If he starts a war, the cardinals will likely kick him out, replacing with a less damaging leader.
