How D&D primary attributes evolved to make no sense Apparently in the 1st D&D edition, primary attributes were easier to use: STR, INT and WIS determined how quickly the hero gained experience in their classes (and chance to say learn a spell), while CON, DEX and CHA provided actual d20 bonuses. The old system allowed hero to have several classes, each offering separate skills sets, compared to the modern 20+ skills.
