    Splunk Unleashes Hunk for Hadoop

With the Hadoop Summit North America underway this week in San Jose there are Hadoop announcements from Splunk, Hortonworks and NetApp, and Zettaset and Informatica.

Splunk releases Hunk.  Splunk (SPLK)  announced the beta version of Hunk: Splunk Analytics for Hadoop. Hunk is a new software product that integrates exploration, analysis and visualization of data in Hadoop. Building upon Splunk’s years of experience with big data analytics technology deployed at thousands of customers, Hunk improves the speed of analyzing data in Hadoop without programming, costly integrations or forced data migrations. Key features include virtual index technology that enables seamless use of the entire Splunk technology stack, interactive data exploration across large, diverse data sets, interactive analysis of data in Hadoop, and building reports and custom dashboards. ”Hunk is an important addition to the Splunk product portfolio,” said Guido Schroeder, senior vice president of products, Splunk. ”Our customers love how Splunk software enables them to easily visualize and analyze data, and they asked us if we could help them do the same on the sizeable low-cost data stores they’ve built up in Hadoop. To create it, we extended our technology with a new patent-pending virtual index technology. Hadoop is a tremendous technology full of potential – if you can get to the data and act on it. We developed Hunk as a standalone software product to help organizations give broader user groups insight into their data assets without custom development, costly data modeling or lengthy batch processing iterations. By providing interactive data exploration, discovery and analytics, Hunk empowers users to derive actionable insights from this raw data in Hadoop.”

Zettaset and Informatica partner on Hadoop.   Informatica (INFA) announced an OEM partnership agreement with Zettaset, to embed Informatica PowerCenter Big Data Edition within its Zettaset Orchestrator Hadoop cluster management solution. With this, Zettaset provides customers streamlined and simplified big data integration to move and integrate data as part of their Apache distribution-based Hadoop implementations regardless of data volume, variety and velocity. Future plans for the agreement include adding Informatica data quality functionality, including data profiling and cleansing, to Zettaset Orchestrator according to customer needs. “There is no other integration vendor in the market providing big data integration capabilities equivalent to Informatica’s,” said Jim Vogt, CEO of Zettaset. “Informatica is perfectly aligned with our focus on enterprise manageability, high availability and comprehensive security for Hadoop, while the Informatica platform approach provides us the flexibility to add data quality, social connections and other big data functionality going forward.”

Hortonworks and NetApp expand strategic relationship. Hortonworks announced the expansion of its strategic relationship with NetApp by putting in place a reseller agreement, enabling NetApp to resell Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP). At the engineering level, NetApp and Hortonworks are working together to create new storage solutions for Hadoop that integrate seamlessly with NetApp E-Series storage systems. The joint development efforts will further expand the Apache Hadoop ecosystem and offer enterprises more choices as NetApp storage systems now integrate with HDP. “As the Apache Hadoop ecosystem continues to mature, enterprises that require next-generation big data analytics functionality will need storage that is highly-available, cost-efficient and optimized for high-performance tasks,” said Brendon Howe, vice president, Product and Solutions Marketing, NetApp. “NetApp is committed to the continued innovation of creating an enterprise-class storage infrastructure for Hadoop-based solutions that is tailored to process data-intensive workloads and produce relevant business insights.”
