Former Intel President at Reins in ARM Chip Startup (FB)
Former Intel president Renee James has joined the startup world and is returning to her processor roots with the launch of Ampere Computing, an ARM-based server chipmaker. Ampere, based in Santa Clara, California, is building 64-bit ARM server processors aimed at hyper-scale cloud providers, with a focus on big data analytics, storage, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing markets. It's products are based on the technology developed by AppliedMicro, acquired by Carlyle Group-backed Project Denver Holdings, which has been relaunched as Ampere. | | 2:36a |
It’s Cool, It’s Well Wired, and It’s Staying in the EU (FB)
Ireland, already a European data center hub, expects GDPR and Brexit to drive more data center growth. GDPR -- Europe’s new General Data Protection Regulation that goes into effect this May -- restricts the movement of data outside Europe and other approved countries. The US, for example, is on the approved list, due to the Privacy Shield agreement. The UK is good for now, because it's still part of the EU; but it’s in the process of leaving union, and there are worries that all the confusion around Brexit may have implications with regard to the GDPR. | | 2:40a |
HPE Spins Out US Data Center Engineering Practice (FB)
A group of private investors has bought out Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s US data center design and engineering consulting practice. The computing equipment giant acquired the practice as EYP Mission Critical Facilities over a decade ago to be in on big enterprise hardware deals ahead of its rivals (primarily Dell and IBM). Last week, eight former senior EYP principals and other investors bought the practice back from HPE and launched it as an independent business. | | 5:52p |
