Map of Brazil in 1901 by a Chinese envoy | Source:遊歷巴西圖經 by Fu Yunlong 傅雲龍 Fu Yunlong was a Chinese travel envoy during the late Qing era, he including 11 others were chosen through an exam by the government to visit foreign nations and learn its politics, history, culture etc in two years to hopefully help modernize China. Fu Yunlong being the most experienced was appointed with his partner Gu Yuankun to visit Japan, USA , Cuba, Canada, Peru and Brazil, Gu eventually got sick in South America and had to return early though Fu continued his journey despite a cholera pandemic in Rio De Janeiro at the time, he would also traveled to other countries such as Chile, Panama and Colombia. Although Fu Yunlong had known English, he had to learn Spanish during in South America and also met important figures such as Ito Hirobumi, president Grover Cleveland, Nicolas Pierola, José Manuel Balmaceda and Brazilian Emperor Pedro II. Fu eventually returned to China after finishing his trip, Unfortunately not all envoy returned as some had died abroad from illnesses or suicide while his three sons all passed away within two days after less than a month of his return.. His effort was also fruitless as most of these envoys with experience were not appointed as diplomat or any positions of importance. He would later published several books about his journals and observations of other countries during his trip. submitted by /u/Kaizerguatarnatorz [link] [comments] | |
