German Democrats: How German settlement patterns influenced 19th century election results in the Midwest | Maps on the left are % German by county, maps on the right are presidential election results. German Americans in the 1800s tended to vote strongly in favor of the Democratic party, which had opposed conscription during the Civil War as well as the prohibition of alcohol. However, German Lutherans were not as Democratic as Catholics, which can explain some of the discrepancies between the maps. submitted by /u/Specialist_Ad_610 [link] [comments]

Brazilian presidential elections in the São Paulo Metro. | São Paulo is the largest city and metro area in Brazil, the Americas and the Western Hemisphere, and one of the top 10 largest in the world (4th to 8th, depending on how you measure) The city has X main voter profiles: The elites: Largely supported PSDB, shifted left though still a majority support Bolsonaro. Main group in areas like Jardins, Moema, Itaim Bibi. The intelectuals: Higher educated and a bit less wealthy than the Elites, largely supported PSDB, but flocked to Lula agains Bolsonaro in 2022. Main group in areas such as Santa Cecilia, Pinheiros, Butantã. The suburban middle-class: Ascending middle-class people from the suburbs. Sometimes wealthy, but generally less educated. The main right-wing voters in the area as of today. Main group in Mooca, Tatuapé, Santana and in the city of São Caetano do Sul. The lower middle-class: The largest individual group. Mainly working-class and mixed race, most of them supported the PT in all elections since 2002 but 2014 and 2018, generally swing voters and shifting right relative to other groups as a lot of them are also evangelical christians. Main group in Itaquera, São Miguel, Osasco. The poor: Living in the outer areas of the city, they're the most marginalized group. Very dependent on welfare, these groups supported PT in all elections since 2002, including Bolsonaro's sweeping victory in 2018. As the lower middle-class group, it's also shifting right, going from giving over 70% to Lula in 2006 to just below 65% in 2022. submitted by /u/Franzisquin [link] [comments]
