The Nile watershed and its sub-basins in cross stitch

It's been a while since I was here!

I posted my US state geology maps and the Bathymetry of the Great Lakes in cross stitch a few years ago. It's been a rough few years-- for all of us being alive, I know-- but I'm building momentum for cool fiber art maps again!

The Geography of the Coffee Trade in the late 1800's
The Geography of the Coffee Trade in the late 1800's

The 6th Map in the 1800's Trade Maps series:

150 years ago, as today, the East African Arabica bean was prized for its superior flavor. Yet its vulnerability to rust disease drove planters to seek hardier and, in effect, less aromatic alternatives. West African Liberica was initially seen as the solution—but it was the Central African Robusta that ultimately reshaped global production due to its resilience and yield.

By the late 1800s, Brazil had already become the world’s leading coffee producer, followed by the Indonesian archipelago, India, and parts of Central America. Notably, key players today—like Kenya, Vietnam, and Peru—were not yet part of the global supply chain.

As with other global commodities of the 19th century, merchants and travelers wrote extensively about where the best and worst coffee came from. Some of those stories are the basis for this map.

    ⚔️ The chaos after Rome: 476 A.D.

Between 365 and 476 AD, the Western Roman Empire goes into a process of internal disintegration. The imperial structure collapses and territorial control passes progressively into the hands of tribes such as the Suevi, Visigoths, Vandals and Alans.

Map of reported rape frequency by Indian state (NCRB, 2019) — One case every 17 minutes nationwide
Map of reported rape frequency by Indian state (NCRB, 2019) — One case every 17 minutes nationwide

In 2019, women reported 30,641 rape cases in India - that is one report every 17 minutes.

There exists a big gap between rapes reported and rapes that actually happen and go unreported - the proportion of rapes that go unreported has been estimated to be about 71% by NCRB (in 2006).

Second, even in the reported cases, only those are reported where rape is the only crime. If there was also murder involved, the crime is reported as murder and not rape because of the Principal Offence Method adopted by NCRB.

Third, trustworthiness of data: Kerala reported 2023 cases of which 1262 were minors. For Rajasthan, of 5997 cases, 1313 were minors. Contrast that with Gujarat where of 548 cases, MH of 2299 cases, MP of 2485 cases, Karnataka of 505 and Telangana of 873 cases - 0 were minors.

West Bengal did not even report 2019's cases which is why 2018's data were reported. Also, if a husband rapes his wife, it is not even considered rape in India.
