Cultural-linguistic map of Southern China. Thoughts? | I first focused on things like rituals, clothing, food, etc. between different dialectical subgroups and ethnic groups (languages). Now, I want to focus a little more on ancestral history, linguistic difference, mutual intelligibility, and influences on culture/language from neighboring groups. I tried my best picking out colors that made sense and showed the areal flow of culture the best. For example, Zhuang and Dai are similar colors as they're part of different groups within the same language family (while still maintaining aspects of a common culture). Smaller changes in color are made for groups with little mutual intelligibility but are still considered the same group within the same language family. Sinitic is a little larger than most language family divisions so it gets a larger range of colors (many of its own subgroups in fact contain dialects not intelligible with each other). Cultural differences also increase the contrast in color and push certain unrelated groups closer together color wise (Such as Pinghua with Zhuang, Min with Hainanese and Taiwanese indigenous [Both also due to Bach Viet substrata]). Map of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast | Ever heard of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast (JAO) in Russia's Far East? It's a fascinating slice of history! The JAO was established by the Soviet Union in 1934. Its primary purpose was to create a designated, secular homeland for Jews, offering an alternative to Zionism and aiding in the development of a remote border region. The Jewish population in the JAO peaked at approximately 46,000-50,000 in the late 1940s. However, harsh conditions and later emigration, especially after Israel's creation, led to a sharp decline. Today, the JAO's total population is around 144,000 (2024 estimate). While Yiddish remains an official language, ethnic Russians make up the vast majority, with the Jewish population now a small minority. It stands as a unique, living relic of Soviet nationality policy. submitted by /u/Knowledge_1000 [link] [comments]

Did you know that the headquarters of Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati are located within ~25 km of each other? | This area, known as the Italian Motor Valley, emerged post-WWII as a hub for luxury sports car manufacturers. Companies like Ferrari and Maserati, established their headquarters in the Emilia-Romagna region. Lamborghini, part of Volkswagen, later joined the fold in the 1960s, transitioning from tractors to high-performance vehicles. And perhaps there wouldn't be such a rich ecosystem if it weren't for Ferrari's bad clutches. Ferruccio Lamborghini later recounted how the idea to build his own car came about: "The problem with the clutch was never cured, so I decided to talk to Enzo Ferrari. I had to wait for him a very long time. 'Ferrari, your cars are rubbish!' I complained. Il Commendatore was furious. 'Lamborghini, you may be able to drive a tractor but you will never be able to handle a Ferrari properly.' This was the point when I finally decided to make a perfect car." The concentration of brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati in a small area has built an automotive ecosystem fueled by innovation and motorsports. Pagani, founded in the 1990s, brought bespoke hypercars to the mix, intensifying competition and driving global excellence in luxury vehicles. submitted by /u/Quartr-app [link] [comments]

I recreated the outline and flag of Italy from food | I did this in 2019 for an art project in school. I used a frozen pizza for this (of course I baked it and ate it afterwards, best pizza of my life). As a grade I received a 2+ (good, B). I also recreated the outlines of Greenland, Germany and Japan. It is not a masterpiece, but I like geography and flags, so I had a lot of fun and prefered it to let food get moldy (first idea). However another student did this with a banana. submitted by /u/Mulumpe [link] [comments]

NYC Democratic mayoral primary results overlaid on subway map, by Daniel Donner | In Tuesday's Democratic primary for mayor in New York City, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (yellow) performed better in areas served by the subway, while former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (blue) did better in more car-centric areas. Interestingly, though not shown on the map, the Mamdani corridor in northeastern Queens similarly runs along the path of an important line of the Long Island Railroad. submitted by /u/The_Downballot [link] [comments]

Gun permit requirements and issuance in the United States compared to Europe | Glossary: Open carry: visible carrying of a gun in public Concealed carry: discreet carrying of gun in public Shall-issue: the institution issuing carry permits may not refuse to issue a permit to an applicant who meets all legal requirements May-issue: the institution issuing carry permits may refuse to issue a permit even if the applicant meets all legal requirements based on their discretion Permissive may-issue: most applicants meeting the legal requirements are issued a permit Restrictive may-issue: a very good reason is required to obtain a carry permit, almost no issues in practice Disclaimers: Note that Northern Ireland deviates from the rest of the UK The maps show the requirements for handguns, other types of firearms may have different requirements The colour scheme does not imply a favourability rating submitted by /u/AgonizingFatigue [link] [comments]
