Map of the Bosporan Kingdom | The Bosporan Kingdom on this map, a fascinating ancient state that emerged in the 5th century BC. It was formed by the unification of Greek city-states, notably Panticapaeum, situated strategically around the Cimmerian Bosporus. This unique entity developed a distinct Greco-Scythian identity, blending Hellenic culture with the strong influence of local nomadic peoples, and prospered largely through its control of the grain trade. Its independence, however, faced a decisive end with its dissolution by invasion from the formidable Kingdom of Pontus in the late 2nd century BC, under the expansionist ruler Mithridates VI Eupator. After the subsequent defeat of Pontus in the Mithridatic Wars, the Bosporan Kingdom found itself incorporated into the Roman Empire. Rather than outright annexation, it became a vital Roman client kingdom, a status it maintained for several centuries, serving as a critical buffer and contributing to Roman control and trade in the Black Sea region. submitted by /u/Knowledge_1000 [link] [comments]

World Map with number of Chess.com members | Because these figures are based on self-reporting, they may not be completely accurate... but most of the people register with the country they're actually in. No surprises in the top two, with the United States and India, at 64 million combined members, making up about one-third of the Chess.com population. I've lived in four cities in three different states in the US and they all just happen to fit in a 45.5mi wide diagonal strip. I extrapolated it to circle the globe to see where else I could live. | I've lived in Houston, TX, Nacogdoches, TX, Kankakee, IL, and Traverse City, MI. This diagonal strip goes through an enormous chunk of ocean. The other large cities it hits include St Petersburg and Moscow in Russia, St Louis and Chicago, and Matamoros in Mexico. One of the mid size cities in there that looked quite nice to me was Umeå, Sweden. Maybe a Swede can tell me if it is as nice as it looks. submitted by /u/SonoraBee [link] [comments]
