Princely States map of British Raj. | At the time of Indian independence in 1947, there were 565 princely states officially recognized in the Indian subcontinent. These states were ruled by local or regional leaders who had a special relationship with the British Crown, but they were not formally part of British India. Colourful areas were Princley States, Cream colour were British Provinces. submitted by /u/AbhishekPro [link] [comments]

Yesterday's Map Showing 40% First Cousin Marriages in Italy Misrepresents Data | Yesterday, this [map](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1lno3n2/rate\_of\_first\_cousin\_marriage\_in\_italy\_19301964/) (which is even cited on Wikipedia) was shared showing first-cousin marriages in Italy during the first half of the 20th century, with some southern regions allegedly exceeding 40%. However, it's likely that the author of that map made a mistake, either by presenting the data per 100 instead of per 1,000 (meaning the actual figure was 4%, not 40%), or by including marriages between more distant relatives, like second or third cousins, under the category of first-cousin marriages. The attached image provides the correct percentages for reference. **Source:** *Kinship, Fractionalization and Corruption* **Authors:** Mahsa Akbari, Duman Bahrami-Rad, Erik O. Kimbrough [Full paper on SSRN](https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract\_id=2847222) >Our consanguinity data are from Cavalli-Sforza et al. (2004) and are based on records of Papal dispensations for consanguineous marriages kept in the Vatican archives. Because consanguinity was officially banned by the church, couples who wished to circumvent the ban had to request approval from their local diocese. Detailed records of these marriages were preserved by the church and compiled in province-level statistics. **We report the consanguinity rate by province, measured as the share of all marriages in the province that were between first cousins, or closer relatives (e.g. uncle-niece marriages) for the period 1945-1964**, since data from this period are available for all provinces and do not include sample variation due to World War II. submitted by /u/Savings_Guitar_58 [link] [comments]

I made an Ottoman map with my boyfriend inspired by our trip to Istanbul! | Firstly, we had a bunch of resources and inspirations based on real maps we saw on the internet, but for lack of motivation I won’t include them now. (If anyone is interested I can give a few of them in the comments). Secondly, neither of us are Arabic or Turkish speakers so we are extremely sorry if anything we wrote there is wrong or offensive - it was not our intention (we used google translate and copied from the real maps aforementioned without much checking or research). And lastly, we are super proud of all the details we put into this map! There is a video of our process too if anyone wants to see. The sigla on the right might give a clue into what time period this map is from and the map on the bottom left corner is an interpretation of that famous map of Constantinople. We hope you appreciate the effort!!! submitted by /u/WeakConference2507 [link] [comments]
