A highly detailed map of the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) based on the book "The Albigensian Crusade" by Jonathan Sumption | I’ve been working for months on a project to recreate the geography of the Albigensian Crusade (Southern France, 1209–1229) with as much historical accuracy as possible. The map is based on contemporary chronicles, medieval cartography references, and modern historical research. It includes cities, castles, abbeys, dioceses, and period routes. Would love to hear feedback from history buffs and fellow map lovers — what would you like to see in future historical maps? submitted by /u/Affectionate_Soft878 [link] [comments]

Decline of ireland's native Irish Speakers (1800-200) | In the 1800s, Irish was the majority language, but it was already losing ground to English, especially in the east. The biggest turning point was the Great Famine in the 1840s. The famine devastated the rural west, where Irish was strongest, leading to mass death and emigration. After the famine, the new National Schools, established in 1831, played a major role. English was the only language used in these schools, and children were often punished for speaking Irish. This created a generation of English speakers. Economic opportunities in the British Empire and the United States also made English the language of progress. Many Irish parents, wanting a better life for their children, encouraged them to speak English. By the early 20th century, Irish was spoken by only a small minority. While there have been efforts to revive the language since Ireland gained independence, the decline, as you can see in this chart, was steep. submitted by /u/Libey [link] [comments]

The trivial debates that divide each country. | Ever wondered what sparks the most passionate arguments across Europe? It's not politics or economics—it’s whether cucumber should be grated or cubed in Bulgaria’s tarator, or if raisins belong in Poland’s sernik. This map hilariously captures the everyday cultural quirks that split nations into two camps. submitted by /u/Libey [link] [comments]
