The Kosi River's rapidly changing course in Bihar, India. over 70 Million people live in this square. The River's course has shifted by over 100 Kilometres within two centuries. | The Kosi river - often called the Sorrow of Bihar, is a mighty Himalayan river originating in Nepal and giving life to one of the most fertile regions in the entire world - Mithilanchal in Bihar, India - Home to over 70 Million people currently. The river has rapidly shifted course over the past 2 centuries, destructing the region- which has led to Mithilanchal becoming one of the poorest regions in the whole of India. In 2008, the Kosi broke through and entered a channel it had deserted a century ago, running almost 50km parallel, flooding villages and leaving thousands dead and missing. Kosi continues to shift its course and bring destruction to the region each Monsoon, being the world's most rapidly course-shifting rivers. submitted by /u/wontyouflyhigh [link] [comments]

Distribution of Megalithic Tombs in Ireland | I know I'm not alone in my love for Ireland's ancient megalithic tombs and sites, so I have mapped all recorded sites across the whole of Ireland. Data for Northern Ireland doesn't provide categories, but you can see the overall distribution. For the Republic, I've included the breakdowns provided by the NMS. The map combines historical monument data from the National Monument Service (NMS) of Ireland with the Department for Communities historical monument data. I cleaned the data sources up with some basic transformation in PowerQuery and then used QGIS to visualise (I'm slowly learning how to do this!). There's obviously a few trends you can see from the data, particularly the concentrations of Wedge and Boulder Tombs in the south west. I'm sure you can spot many more that I wouldn't notice too. I previously mapped Ogham Stones and Stone Circles. Any thoughts about the map or data insights would be very welcome. submitted by /u/Sarquin [link] [comments]

How populated is Java, the most populated island in the world? | Java isn't just an island-it's a population giant! Home to around 156.4 million people, Indonesia's Java Island has more inhabitants than most entire countries on Earth. As this map shows, only a handful of nations (including giants like China, India, the United States, and Brazil) have larger populations than Java alone. From bustling Jakarta to fertile rice fields, Java is the world's most densely populated island, packing incredible cultural and economic life into a relatively small space. It's a staggering reminder of how human numbers can be concentrated on just one piece of the global puzzle! submitted by /u/Mindful-Commander [link] [comments]

An Irish language map I saw in an old museum in Cork, Ireland. Circa about 1922 as Ireland is still part of the UK, and it looks like The Ottomans and Greece have just finished fighting. | I found this in Leahys open farm in Cork, I couldn't find a date on it, but it appears to focus on Europe, and refers to places like Asia Minor submitted by /u/Altruistic_While_621 [link] [comments]

The accurately translated 1402 world map from Korea | Kangnido is known as Korea’s oldest world map. I’ve seen two incorrect translations just this past week, so here’s the correct one.
