Density map of cities in Metropolitan France twinned with German (green), Belgian (dark yellow), Canadian (brown), Spanish (light green), Hungarian (dark red), Irish (purple), Italian (orange), Polish (light blue), Portuguese (red), Romanian (purple), Eng | Methodology point! I obtained the data by importing it from https://www.annuaire-mairie.fr/jumelage.html. The problem is that it lists the cities only by name and the country of origin or department for the French side. I then obtained the coordinates of the municipalities abroad by joining them with coordinates obtained from the Geoname website or using the OpenCage geocoding API. The maps represent the most common twinning arrangements, facilitating this type of cartographic representation. (Sorry for the Swiss, and the rest of the world, but if you don't have enough twinned cities, this type of map became mostly pointless... or they are mostly are only the major cities or one municipality in France). Feel free to ask me anything or about any countries not shown here. For the cities of Overseas France, we have - one from Reunion to Durban, South Africa;
- one from Cayenne (Fr Guiana) to Thiès, Senegal;
- one from Bora-Bora (Fr Polynesia) to Port-Villa, Vanuatu;
- Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guatemala + 2 from Cuba to Martinique;
- one from Trinidad, Cuba and India to Guadeloupe;
- 2 from Sweden to Saint Barthélemy;
- one from Indonesia, 2 from Australia, 2 from New Zealand and 3 from Vanuatu to New Caledonia;
The major countries outside of Europe and not shown here (USA and Canada) are, China, Japan, French West Africa (Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso), Armenia (for it's size), Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and Israel. The data is from around the start of this year, and it's not perfect 100% but close enough, some are missing. We therefore discover a slight geographical influence, then cultural and historical (example: the mining/industrial basin of Moselle with Italy → presence of a population from immigration, or Brittany and Ireland. Because Celtic). PS: The colours were assigned automatically and randomly by exporting the rasters from the script. I consider them all readable, but let me know if you have any difficulties. PS2: No, Y (France) isn't twined with Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, but yeah it should, obviously. And Cissé (France) has the most twin than any city in France, one for every member of the European Union, followed by the big one you know. submitted by /u/maps-and-potatoes [link] [comments]

Mountains through the eyes of painters and cartographers | Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time in QGIS. To make the technical side more fun, I tried mixing it with a bit of art. - Took paintings of mountains by Russian artists.
- Downloaded DEMs from OpenTopography with a Python script.
- Created in Eduard textures using Shaded Relief, Texture Shading and Ambient Occlusion, inspired by mid-20th century mapmakers (archive).
- Extracted color palettes from the paintings with Adobe Color.
- Combined them with Esri imagery basemap.
- Blended the painting colors on top with different modes.
Not all colors translate well — sometimes the overlay looks a bit muddy on grey textures. Still, I really like how it’s turning out, so I wanted to share. Next step: improve the color blending, add labels, routes, and interesting points — so that in the end these maps could be printed as postcards after visiting the mountains. submitted by /u/mighty_pig [link] [comments]
