Pennsylvania's Union Canal Transportation Route (1826) | Pennsylvania's Union Canal was a significant water transportation route that existed in the 19th century. Proposed by William Penn in 1690, it aimed to connect Philadelphia with the Susquehanna River. Construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1828, running approximately 82 miles from Middletown to Reading. The canal played a crucial role in shipping anthracite coal and lumber eastward to Philadelphia, and it featured 93 locks and a 4-foot deep channel. The Union Canal Tunnel, in Lebanon, Penna., is the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the U.S., remains a notable part of its legacy. submitted by /u/AlMtnWoman [link] [comments]

Countries with male life expectancy over 80 | Since I saw maps showing "countries with life expectancy over 80" to show maps with a very high life expectancy, I decided to make a map with stricter criteria: "countries with male life expectancy over 80". Because males usually live shorter then females on average, "male life expectancy over 80" is also "life expectancy for both genders over 80" Because the criteria for having high life expectancy is more strict, some countries get excluded in the process (examples would be UK, Belgium, and Germany, all having an average life expectancy over 80 average both genders, but lower then 80 for males) The results are quite interesting to say the least. submitted by /u/RakataniShinobiko [link] [comments]

Mapping ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian and Croatian Wars: Percentage of minority populations displaced from each entity | Inspired by a terrible map posted (and deleted) yesterday, I tried to make a sourced version that somewhat makes sense. * Finding numbers for Serbs displaced from Croatia proper was incredibly hard and none of them really add up. This figure was calculated by using the 581k Serbs number from the 1991. census, subtracting the number of Serbs living in RSK (Serb Republic of Krajina, taken from the same census), and calculating the percentage using the 254k displaced from outside RSK figure from the US report. The actual number could be as low as 60% or as high as whatever you'd get asking a schizophrenic Serb nationalist. Also, I am not entirely convinced by the RSK percentage, but that was the most concrete figure I could find. ** I should clarify that Serbia and Montenegro did not technically participate in either war formally. The 26% was just for the love of the game. Additional note: The borders are representative and do not accurately represent held territories. submitted by /u/Loife1 [link] [comments]

NFL TV coverage maps | I've always enjoyed taking a peak at the TV coverage maps before sunday. I've always wondered what criteria goes into choosing games for unaffiliated regions, and how heavily those criteria are weighed against each other. How popular are the teams, how much has the owner payed the network under the table, how big are the fanbases, how close is the matchup, or simply how good the teams are. Based on the map above, Cincinnati (a team with a very high powered offence that's expected to be a playoff contender) is playing against the Browns (who are bad) and the result is the game is essentially locked in Ohio (where it should be). Meanwhile a very similar situation is Washington vs the NY giants, however that game is being broadcast across vast portions of the midwest and central US. Lastly, are are the 2 west coast teams in SF and Seattle being shown in New Orleans, Boston, and Pittsburgh? At the root of it all I'm sure its just an algorithm that's designed to somehow increase profits as much as possible, but it still intrigues me. submitted by /u/AGuyWithBadIdeas [link] [comments]
