1925 Germany Presidential election | Here’s the context A bunch of candidates ran in the first round. Nobody got a majority, so a second round was held. But Weimar didn’t just have a “top two system” like most countries. Anybody could run in the second round, even if they didn’t run in the first. As a result, the militarist People’s Party and the regional Catholic Bavarian People’s Party withdrew their candidates to support Paul von Hindenburg, who they believed would have a better chance than Jarres. Meanwhile the Social Democrats and German Democrats (liberals) withdrew their candidates to support Centrist Wilhelm Marx. The communists stuck with Thaalman for the second round. Despite not running until the second round, Hindenburg won, but only narrowly. If the Bavarian People’s Party had supported Marx instead as was initially expected, it’s quite likely Marx would have won. Very stupid system. submitted by /u/FindingWilling613 [link] [comments]

Cities in the world with the most temperate climate (red=most temperate, blue=least) | Link to adjust params (may crash on mobile) here This gives a temperate climate score of different cities around the world. It gives these penalties (adjusted based on severity): - # of windy days >=10mph/16kph
- # of humid days >=70f/21c dewpoint
- low average sunshine (under 75%)
These penalties are applied for each season (defined as Dec/Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr/May, etc) - high/low temperatures below 55/40f or 13/4c
- 2x penalty for high/low temperature over 82/67f or 28/19c (warm low temp is also a proxy for humid so it compounds the humid penalty)
Some examples: California and parts of the Mediterranean barely have any penalty and so are close to the max of 200 Cairo and Las Vegas are bad in 1 season but not terribly so and don’t have other penalties and so are good. Phoenix and Baghdad are horrible in 1 season but don’t have other major penalties and so are middling. Irkutsk and Lagos are horrible for most of the year and so rank poorly (may be negative but it all shows as 0 in map). Other “good climate” maps like myperfectweather only consider number of days in a threshold, but don’t include how bad the days that aren’t are- this factors that in. submitted by /u/mrpaninoshouse [link] [comments]

What circles of increasing size centered around Paris, France really looks like with the Mercator projection | I made this image to show how the Mercator projection distorts circles as they grow larger around a point on the globe. There is another image that gets posted often which depicts a 'guitar pick' shape which is not very accurate. I made this map using this tool for drawing circles around locations and photo editing website photopea. submitted by /u/jottav [link] [comments]
