On-hold-time algorithm
HP came up with a clever way to boost use of bullshit generators:
when customers called the phone line for customer disservice, HP would
make
each one wait 15 minutes listening to would-be brainwashing to use
the chatbot instead, before allowing the connection.
The rage of customers must have been powerful, because HP soon
retreated from this nastiness.
But it still carries out many forms of nastiness.
I have often had to wait over an hour for a business to respond. So I
have learned how to handle my email while hearing these "use our
convenient but unjust web site" torture session. Having email to
distract me from the torture so it doesn't hurt.
