    Immigration judges in the US

Immigration judges in the US are not chosen for knowing immigration law, or for thinking clearly about it, and a fraction are so strongly biased that they always deny asylum, even to people who were tortured as political prisoners.

I am sure this is at least indirectly related by the general attitude of hostility to immigrants.

"Echoes of Munich in Ukrainian Reversal

Alan Singer sees *Echoes of Munich in [the wrecker's] Ukrainian Reversal.*

I have been thinking the same. There is no reason to believe the Putin's appetite for expansion stops with Ukraine. With the corrupter's support, Putin might aim to capture various countries now part of NATO.

US judges alarmed over rise in violent threats

*US judges alarmed over rise in violent threats as Trump and Musk lambaste them.*

I expect they see judges as the last remaining obstacle to establishing outright dictatorship in the US, and they surely know that their hate machine provokes real violence.

Population of butterflies in US fell

The total population of butterflies in the US fell 20% from 2000 to 2020. (I do not say "22%" because that is surely more precision than these measurements can support.)

    This decline is surely continuing.

Bully's men considering deporting Ukrainian refugees

The bully's men are considering deporting all Ukrainian refugees.

Sending people back to a country where they would be in danger is directly prohibited by the treaties that established the asylum system.

    London low-emissions zone

The London low-emissions zone is very effective in reducing toxic air pollution, and also substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions from driving.

The one really bad thing about it that it is enforced using surveillance — and that is not inherently necessary.

Bully threatens to deport non-citizens for "antisemitic" statements

The bully has threatened to deport non-citizens who make statements about Gaza and Israel that the bully chooses to call "antisemitic".

As the ACLU reports, deportation on those grounds would be unconstitutional, but the bully feels entitled to disregard the Constitution.

The bully will surely stretch the meaning of "antisemitic", as has become habitual for right-wing extremists, and conflate condemnation of Israel's deadly violence with antisemitism. To make matters worse, he proposes to use some dodgy software to make the accusations. It is unjust to find someone guilty of anything based on heuristics.

For the bully, rushing to judgment and punishment is a way of demonstrating his power. Here's another act of bullying aimed at forcing US universities into strict censorship of protests.

HAMAS plainly is a terrorist organization, but it is unjust for governments to label groups (or individuals) as "terrorist" by fiat. That decision calls for a fair trial.

The practice of declaring organizations "terrorist" denies a fair trial to people charged with the crime of "aiding" that "terrorist organization". Their trials do not try to judge the crucial question — is that organization really terrorist? — which is simply taken for granted.

    Congress hearing on Antisemitism

*Congress Hearing on Antisemitism Does Nothing for Jewish Safety, Advances Authoritarianism.*

*[The wrecker] threatens to pull federal funds for US schools allowing "illegal protests".* By which he means, "any protests" that he doesn't like.

Antisemitism and condemnation of violent repression are not the same. People protesting Israel's violent repression of Palestinians should take care to clarify that distinction, and set an example to help others recognize the difference. By doing that, they will thwart the efforts of Netanyahu and other right-wingers to confuse the two.

Students in Malta charged with breaking "security"

Three students in Malta and their instructor have been charged with the crime of breaking "security". They found vulnerabilities in an app (surely nonfree) and reported them to its developer after verifying they were real vulnerabilities.

I don't know any other facts about the app, but I expect it would be malware. It follows that the app harms the computing security of students who use it much more than these students did to the app.

Reporting bugs in a program helps the program's developers. If the developers treat you decently, which includes respecting your freedom, such cooperation is the right thing for users to do. But if the developers thinks "security" means keeping users firmly under the developers' power, they deserve punishment rather than help.

US citizens: call for legislation to break up Big Medicine, including UnitedHellth. (The article explains all the different medicine businesses that conglomerate combines.)

I think horizontal monopolies like that used to be limited generally by US anti-trust law.
