Classified: The Untold Story of Racial Classification in America

История расовых классификаций и преференций в США. Если вы думаете, что всё плохо, то вы ещё ничего не знаете. На самом деле вся эта система - кромешный пиздец, на который постоянно нагромождаются новые и новые слои, чтобы как-то исправить проблемы, создаваемые старыми (голос за кадром: ничего, конечно, не исправляют). Каждый из этих слоёв вносит свою собственную нотку безумия в этот адский концерт. Отменить это всё никто не решается, потому что - вы что же, расист?!

Много очень интересных биографических подробностей. Особенно интересно об отношениях еврейских учёных - которые когда-то были немецкими - и таких личностей, как Гейзенберг.

Коммунисты - это плохо. Коммунисты-будёновцы - ещё хуже. Я думаю, есть люди, которым, для того, чтобы это понять, нужна книга, и, возможно, не одна. Я, однако, это знал и так, а больше в этой книге ничего, в общем-то, и нет. Так что для меня она оказалась совершенно бесполезной. Никаких секретов - для тех, кто минимально знаком с новейшей историей - она не раскрывает, хотя, конечно, для выпускника американской академии многое может оказаться секретом.

Ещё одна историческая книга - о борьбе испанцев и португальцев за торговлю пряностями. С детальными подробностями всех великих путешествий и описаниями, насколько безумными были все эти вояжи в никуда, чтобы добыть несметные богатства. Очень хорошо написано, рекомендую.

Careless people

Мемуар авторства Sarah Wynn-Williams, которая проработала 6 лет в Фейсбуке Director of Public Policy. Перед этим она работала в посольстве Новой Зеландии и Oxfam International. В общем, если вы вообразите стандартный эталон грантоеда из GONGO, платоновскую форму Экспертов (ТМ), которые за всё хорошее, против всего плохого - то это тот человек, в котором этот идеал нашёл свой аватар. Сара решила, что нарождающемуся (в то время) Фейсбуку нужен человек, который будет рулить их политикой на мировой арене, и добилась, чтобы её наняли на эту должность. Дальше всё пошло не так. Потому что, ясное дело, мизогинисты и капиталисты её не слушали и не делали всё, как надо (как надо, в книгах не описывается, но это и так ясно всем Людям Доброй Воли, зачем об этом писать). А уж когда выбрали Трампа, то совсем ужас настал, а многие в Фейсбуке даже этому радовались (вот кошмар-то, вы только представьте!).
В общем, одновременно, окно в мир пейсбука (тот ещё террариум), управляемого рептилоидами, и в разум одной из рептилоидов, которая даже не осознаёт, что несёт какую-то ответственность за происходившее, не говоря уж о какой-либо рефлексии или эмпатии.
Да, когда Сару спросили, всё ли написанное - правда, она ответила: "What I would love is for us not to fall into the distraction. There's a real risk that we talk about things that don't matter". Нувыпонели.

I, Asimov

Азимов пишет о предмете, с которым он знаком лучше всех, и который является, по-видимому, одним из его любимейших - о себе. Он этого и не скрывает. Если игнорировать его политические вставки, в которых есть всё, что можно ожидать от либерального нью-йоркского еврея, и ничего более - остальное крайне занимательно, хотя и очень длинно и подробно.

Исследование, откуда берётся талант, и почему одни добиваются, а другие нет. Идеи довольно интересные, хотя, как и всякая книга, основанная на одной гипотезе, которая обьясняет ВСЁ на свете (в этой книге это - миелин), страдает некоторой узостью взглядов и стремлением к confirmation bias. Но в целом посылка такая - если вам что-то нравится делать, и вы будете упорно в этом тренироваться, то рано или поздно у вас что-то получится. Не то, чтобы супер-новая мысль, конечно, но зато рассказанная с примерами и привлечением молекулярной биологии.

Что я читал в 2025 - худлит
Первая часть списка книг 2025, художественная литература. Нехудожественная - во второй части.

Dresden Files:

Бодрая городская фентези - вампиры, чародеи, демоны, эльфы, волколаки, полиция, любофф и крофф. Всё как надо, сделано качественно и без повесточки. Это не высокая литература, но как развлекон работает на отлично. Прочёл пока первые пять. Буду продолжать серию.

Понравилось, хотя книга совершенно ни о чём, по-моему - show about nothing, так сказать. Но читается легко. Я ожидал, что описываемое мне не будет близко, но ошибся.

Как-то упустил это в детстве, а сейчас почитал. Буденовцы очень любят это произведение за то, что аборигены там все небинарные трансгендеры, но роман абсолютно не об этом. Т.е. это там тоже есть, но в том же смысле, в котором в других романах есть антигравитация - как фантастическое допущение.

Rhesus Chart

Номер пятый из серии Laundry files. Чем дальше в лес, тем качество книг серии становится хуже. Эту я дочитал, хотя под конец уже становилось скучновато, а вот следующую - Annihilation Score - бросил в начале. Автор, кстати, мудак и буденовец, что в принципе не значит, что обязательно плохой писатель, но в данном случае и креативчик, увы, выдохся. Больше его читать не буду.

Murderbot Diaries

Похождения киборга-аутиста в корпоративной галактике, где одни людишки постоянно пытаются убить других, а он их должен спасать, потому что его так запрограммировали. Несмотря на вялые попытки авторки просунуть повесточку, отлично читабельно. Фильм смотреть совершенно не обязательно, жалкое подобие. А книги прочитал все, на одном дыхании.

Полари 1 - Стрела, монета, искра

Фентези цикла Романа Суржикова (да, я тоже понятия не имел, кто это такой) - средневековая фэнтези с магией и электричеством. Интриги, заговоры, убийства. Мир построен вполне качественно, читать можно. Буду продолжать серию.

Приквел к Основанию Азимова - как всё начиналось. Не плохо, но и не то, чтобы супер захватывающе. Роботы появляются, но как-то совершенно непонятно, зачем. Ну робот, и чо?

Прославленное путешествие Пирсига в глубины собственного сознания и по дорогам Америки, в поисках Истины. Я понимаю, почему он её ищет, и зачем, но лично мне кажется, что ищет не там и не так. Впрочем, это его дело. Ознакомиться было интересно, хотя конечно для планируемого эффекта мне бы следовало быть лет на 30 моложе - тогда могло сработать.

Вы скажете, это чистая правда - и это так. Все жертвы терактов - в отличие от покушений, или военных действий, например - просто оказались в неправильном месте в неправильное время. Террористы их убили не потому, что они хотели убить лично этих людей, а - потому что хотели убить кого-нибудь. 

Но я не привёл полную цитату. Там ещё было в начале немного, всего шесть букв. Вот такие: "For him". Видите ли, этот человек - Peter Meagher, - не был евреем. Поэтому для него - и только для него! - это была катастрофическая случайность. А для всех остальных, евреев - с точки зрения людей доброй воли - вполне закономерное, хотя, возможно, и прискорбное, событие. Евреи есть, евреев убивают, что тут удивительного? И наконец, большая часть посаженных по 58-й — это мирные люди (а часто и старые, и больные), всю жизнь обходившиеся словами, без кулаков — и не готовые к ним теперь, как и раньше.

Ситуация, конечно, совершенно другая - но кое-какие контуры узнаваемы. И чем дальше, тем больше контуров вырисовывается. Пока что только как смутный угрожающий призрак - в США. А в Европе уже и гораздо более плотно.

Для тех, кто не понял намёками, разьясняют прямо. Демократы - когда власть попадёт опять в их руки - намереваются терроризировать любого, кто сотрудничал каким-то образом с администрацией Трампа. Т.е. концепция преемственности власти, как и все остальные нормы, тоже спущена в унитаз, потому что Трамп.

И они, чбсх, не бояться обьявлять об этом прямо сейчас, в разгар жестокой диктатуры фашиста Трампа - потому что знают, что им никто за это ровно ничего не сделает, а они, в свою очередь, когда придёт время, сделают очень многое, без всяких помех. Республиканцы не решатся на такую кампанию - вот, собственно, два жалких обвинения пока подали, и буквально в считанные дни, где эти обвинения? Пшик! Один партийный судья - и нет никаких обвинений больше. А ведь партийных судей у них тысячи. И эти тысячи признают незаконным что угодно, что прикажет партия. Репетиция уже была в каденцию бидона, но это была всего-лишь демо-версия. 

То же самое, что они сделали с демонстрантами 6 января, то же самое, что они сделали с Джулиани и ещё многими сторонниками Трампа - только в этот раз уже не надо будет никуда ездить, нигде протестовать и быть какой-то знаковой фигурой. Просто сотрудничество с правительством США, когда оно не в руках демократов, будет преступлением. Просто работа в DHS, служба в армии, работа в любом правительственном учреждении - ну а что же, если Трамп - гитлер, то и все, кто подчиняется его приказам - нацисты. Конечно, всех не посадят - кто саботировал, те чисты, тот, кто делом продемонстрирует верность партии, просто будет под подозрением, пока ударным трудом на благо партии не докажет, что перековались. Но под подозрением будут все. 

Может, конечно, следующий республиканский президент, если он когда-то случится, и амнистирует их. Если он будет такой же, как Трамп. Даже в этом случает каждому коллаборационисту гарантируется несколько лет ада. А если он окажется таким, как 95% республиканцев? Тогда и этого не будет. Повозмущаются в соцсетях и всё.

На этот раз вместо схватки двух йокодзун, только один йокодзуна и один, вполне вероятно, будущий йокодзуна. Аонишки Арата, в миру Данило Явгусишин, родившийся в Виннице в 2004 году, побеждает йокодзуну Хошорю и завоевывает ноябрьский Кубок, титул озеки (чемпионa, это ещё не утверждено официально, но с таким результатом практически неизбежно) и всеобщее почтение.



P.S. скватки двух йокодзун, увы, не было - йокодзуна Оносато в матче с Аонишки получил травму плеча и вынужден был пропустить матч с Хошорю. Будем надеяться, что к январскому турниру всё заживёт.
