Fredrik Neij, the Swedish co-founder of file sharing site Pirate Bay, has been captured on the Thailand-Laos border after four years on the run.

Neij has been missing since he was handed a prison sentence for hacking crimes in 2010.

The Swede was caught together with his wife at the border between Thailand and Laos in south east Asia.

His lawyer, Jonas Nilsson, confirmed the arrest to Sveriges Radio.

"Fredrik called me yesterday and explained that he was in Bangkok...he had been arrested," he said.

"As far as I know, staff from the Swedish embassy are on their way to where he is. He has been told that he will be taken to Sweden."

He added that while it "remained unclear" exactly why Neij was arrested, he suspected it was in relation to the sentencing from the Svea Court in 2010.

Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, the other co-founder of the peer-to-peer file sharing site, was this week sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison in Denmark.

Both Svartholm Warg and Neij have often been in trouble for breaching copyright laws both in Sweden and abroad.

Warg has been in solitary confinement in a Danish prison since November last year.
