In the winter of 1977, of the 5.7 million people who took
part in the national college entrance examination, only
273,000 students were admitted to attend higher
education. Compared with the number of eligible
participants, the number of students admitted was only a
fraction (4.8 percent of those who sat for the exam).

million and in 1999, the annual enrollment was 1.69
million and in 2000, the enrollment reached to 2.2
