| 1:11a | Faust' Opera Video Stirs Angry Parents Some parents in this prairie town are angry with an elementary school music teacher for showing pupils a video about the opera "Faust," whose title character sells his soul to the devil in exchange for being young again. "Any adult with common sense would not think that video was appropriate for a young person to see. I'm not sure it's appropriate for a high school student," Robby Warner said after two of her children saw the video. Another parent, Casey Goodwin, said, "I think it glorifies Satan in some way." Tresa Waggoner showed approximately 250 first-, second- and third-graders at Bennett Elementary portions of a 33-year-old series titled "Who's Afraid of Opera" a few weeks ago. The video features the soprano Dame Joan Sutherland and three puppet friends discussing Gounod's "Faust." Waggoner thought it would be a good introduction to opera. Her critics questioned the decision to show children a portrayal of the devil, Mephistopheles, along with a scene showing a man being killed by a sword and a reference to suicide. School Superintendent George Sauter said the teacher should not have shown the video to children below the fourth grade but will not lose her job. She has sent letter of apology to all elementary school parents in Bennett, population 2,400 and about 25 miles east of Denver on Colorado's eastern plains. Waggoner, who is in her first year teaching vocal music in Bennett, said she doesn't expect to stay in town. "I know I'm not accepted here, that I'm not welcome here by the parents," she said. | 1:16a | Gay Actor in Missionary Role Stirs Flap "End of the Spear," a movie that depicts the slaying of Protestant missionaries in South America, is provoking a side debate among some religious conservatives because lead actor Chad Allen has advocated for gay causes. "Spear" tells the true story of bush pilot Nate Saint, played by Allen, and four colleagues who were killed 50 years ago by jungle tribesmen in Ecuador whom they wanted to evangelize. Protests about Allen originated with sharperiron.org, the Web site of the Rev. Jason Janz, a self-described fundamentalist and assistant pastor of Red Rocks Baptist Church in Lakewood, Colo. Janz cited the Allen fans' Web site, TV interviews and articles from gay magazines to complain that the actor is not just homosexual but an activist who advocates same-sex marriages and adoptions, produces gay films and has starred in a stage play about a gay Jesus figure. "What were they thinking?" demanded the Rev. R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. This week, Janz posted a corrected version of his protest statement after speaking with the independent film's producer, Every Tribe Entertainment. The Christian-oriented company, based in Oklahoma City, prepares inspirational fare for general commercial release. Hanon, an evangelical Protestant, said: "We don't endorse Chad's lifestyle. We disagree with him on homosexuality, and we knew some in our audience would be sensitive to it. But we decided to proceed." Hanon said if the company had known about Allen beforehand "he probably would not have been offered the role." The Allen flap went unnoticed in the review from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which recommended "Spear" for adults only due to violence. | 3:13p | Так как последние шесть лет из за плохого роста волос (связанного с плохим кровообращением в районе головы из-за ослабленных шейных мышц) я стригусь исключительно под машинку, а постричься под машинку в городе, в котором я сейчас живу, мучаясь от экзистенциального несчастья, стоит минимум 30 CHF, то я решил, что пожалуй, чем отдавать деньги какому-нибудь турецкому брадобрею за 5 минут работы, мне дешевле купить себе машинку для стрижки волос и брить голову самому - причем можно будет это делать намного чаще, а чем чаще стрижешься тем, кажется, больше волос вырастает.  Вобщем, сзади, конечно, не очень хорошо получилось. У ушей тоже. Но все это мелочи по сравнению с окончательно обретенной самодостаточностью! |

| 10:51p | Orlando!!! В 1915 г. в давосском санатории для душевнобольных здоровый лысый доктор проводит психиатрические эксперименты. И когда в пансионат привозят контуженного на войне невротика неопределенного пола, доктор решает его вылечить во что бы то ни стало. Сперва больному показывают кадры военной хроники, а когда это не помогает, его гипнотизируют и внушают, что он любит одну из пациенток, истеричку, наркоманку и нимфоманку, больную туберкулезом. Но, увы! истеричка любит сына еврейского банкира, скрывающегося в высокогорной лечебнице от армейской повинности. Дело осложняется тем, что этого еврейчика любит и главная санитарка - негритянка в чепчике. Однажды ночью истеричка и еврейский дезертир хотя сбежать из клиники, но влюбленая санитарка застает их в самый неподходящий момент. Банкирский сын хочет подкупить ее золотым браслетом, но та в растроенных чувствах сдает беглецов лысому доктору. В то же самое время контуженный больной, накрывшись белым халатом, чтобы его не заметили, проникает в каморку пожарного, выкрадывает пожарный топорик и начинает им размахивать, угрожая всех убить. К нему со всех сторон спешат санитары в противогазах.     Раньше было так: чем выше голос, тем героичней герой. Потом Просвещение и Французская Революция отменили кастратов (посчитав кастрацию бесчеловечной жестокостью) и в главных партиях стали геройствовать женщины. Современные режиссеры умело используют это обстоятельство придавая своим постановкам высокоактуальный лесбийский оттенок. Я, правда, очень утомился. Да и место у меня было на этот раз неважное в ложе, позади женщины-палки у которой из под брюк виднелась резинка белых трусов. |
