Charles Robert Leslie, английский живописец (1794-1859); родился в Лондоне. Его родители-американцы увезли его с собой в 1799 г. в Филадельфию и намеревались подготовить к книжной торговле, но юный Чарльз выказывал большие способности и влечение к искусству, вследствие чего друзья доставили ему в 1811 г. средства возвратиться в Лондон и поступить (в 1813 г.) в ученики Королевской академии художеств. В 1826 г. был избран в члены лондонской академии. В 1833 он уехал в Америку, чтобы стать учителем рисования в военном училище в Уэст-Пойнте, но через несколько месяцев отказался от этой должности и явился назад в Лондон. 5 мая 1859 он умер. |
