    mrxvt: Fast, light multitabbed terminal emulator

    As any other Debian user I love writing obscure commands on my terminal. I love too having so many open terminals that I have to come up with a special system to find the one where my favorite obscure command is running on.

    To be able to enjoy this I need a very fast multitabbed terminal emulator: mrxvt.

    Some of the things I like the most about mrxvt are for example,

    • It is very fast and light.
    • Fast pseudo-transparency.
    • Background with your favorite images.
    • Highly configurable keyboard shortcuts.
    • You can have the same command typed on every tab at the same time. This feature is disabled by default. you can enable it by editing /etc/mrxvt/mrxvtrc and uncommenting the ToggleBroadcast macro (around line 171). After that, Ctrl+Shift+d toggles input broadcasting to all tabs.
    • Automatic or “by-hand” tab labeling.
    • It is independent of your desktop (no KDE or GNOME needed).
    • Did I mention that is very fast and light?

    After installing it would look something like this:

    You can change this rather old fashioned look by copying the example config file from
    /usr/share/doc/mrxvt-common/examples/mrxvtrc.sample.gz
    And placing it in ~/.mrxvtrc

    The file is full of comments helping you with the meaning of each option. Of course you can find all available options in the man page. Some useful shortcuts are Ctrl-shift-t to open a new tab and Ctrl-shift-m to show the menu.

    So, after playing, trying and tweaking for a little while you can get a futuristic look for your terminals. Like this one of me sketching this article on an emacs session inside mrxvt (Note all those beautiful tabs up there)

    Downsides? Well it depends on the kind of user,

    • No UTF-8 support.
    • It has no config menu.
    • You have to remember the shortcuts or read the config file every now and then.
    • And as with anything worth doing, to get things working the way you want to you’ll have to read through the man page and maybe scratch your head once or twice but it’ll work.

    To sum up, it’s the perfect application to config during those boring rainy weekends and then show off to your friends at work.

    mrxvt is available in Debian stable and in Ubuntu too.

    Phil Windley's DSL adventures

    Phil Windley has has a new startup, and he is documenting some of aspects of their design process (business and technical) on his blog. For us the nice part is that he is building a DSL. Here is an explanation why building a DSL makes sense (not that we need one, over here, but still a nice analysis). And here is a discussion of high order perl and parsing.

    Well, two nights of working in a drunkin stupor and I have finished transfering the Coup De Grace info from my page to the new BloodAxis.com page. I must say, Kevin I Slaughter has put together a very attractive web page. And I appreciate his patience for rescuing the whole thing after I fucked it up last night. But now it's done...

    Does that mean my work is done... NO!! READERS I NEED YOUR HELP. If it's not shown on the Coup De Grace section, that means I don't have it. Yes, I am an archivist. Look it over, you will catch on to the format pretty quick. I need some of the CDG booklets. I need some of the zine articles from 1984 - 1987. Pictures of young Micheal would be nice too.

    English newspapers reach Gibraltar by P & O four days late. Local English daily Gibraltar Chronicle & Official Gazette, 8 pages of which about 21/2 pages advertisements, ld. Current number 31, 251. More or less pro-Fascist. Local Spanish papers El Annunciador and El Campanse, each four pages largely adverts, ld. Daily. No very definite standpoint politically, perhaps slightly pro-Franco. Ten or eleven Franco papers sold here, also three Government papers including Solidaridad Obrera. The latter at least six days old when obtainable here, and much less on evidence. Also two pro-Government Spanish papers published in Tangiers, El Porvenir and Democracia. Prices of these stated in Franco exchange.
    Impossible to discover sentiments of local Spanish population. Only signs on walls are Viva Franco and Phalangist symbol, but very few of these.
    Population of town about 20,000, largely Italian origin but nearly all bilingual English-Spanish. Many Spaniards work here and return into Spain every night. At least 3000 refugees from Franco territory. Authorities now trying to get rid of these on pretext of overcrowding. Impossible to discover wages and food prices. Standard of living apparently not very low, no barefooted adults and few children. Fruit and vegetables cheap, wine and tobacco evidently untaxed or taxed very little (English cigarettes 3/- a hundred, Spanish 10d. a hundred), silk very cheap. No English sugar or matches, all Belgian. Cows’ milk 6d. a pint. Some of the shopkeepers are Indians and Parsees.
    Spanish destroyer Jose Luis Diez lying in harbour. A huge shell-hole, probably four or five feet across, in her side, just above water-level, on port side about fifteen to twenty feet behind bow. Flying Spanish Republican flag. The men were at first apparently prevented from going ashore, now allowed at certain hours to naval recreational ground (i.e. not to mix with local population). No attempt being made to mend the ship.
    Overheard local English resident: “It’s coming right enough. Hitler’s going to have Czecho-Slovakia all right. If he doesn’t get it now he’ll go on and on till he does. Better let him have it at once. We shall be ready by 1941.”

    Доброе время суток!
    У меня есть тупая задачка, а гугл ничего готового не говорит. На моей машине есть сетевой интерфейс eth0 (интернет, локалка), есть wlan0 который раздаёт вайфай ноуту. Так вот, без qos всё работает так : пока что-то качается из торрентов или http - всё остальное очень сильно тормозит и иногда даже по таймауту отваливается (на eth0 стоит траффик шейпер у прова). Надо как-то поделить траффик между всеми поровну. Почитал тут про tc и tcng, ничего путнего не выходит.
    (выдать высокий приоритет http поможет только от торрентов, я часто напрямую с http лью)
    Подскажите как делать ?

    Дорогие разбирающиеся в этом лучше чем я (т.е в данном случае - все),

    Посоветуйте пожалуйста, мне нужен ноут под определенную программу. Сказали у него должно быть:
    1. 2Гига оперативки
    2. nVidea или GFORCE или RAPEON (GIGABITE). Видеокарты со своей памятью, желательно 512 мега
    3. Самая простая, но самостоятельная видеокарточка
    4. FIREWIRE карточка (IEEE 1394)
    Каждое из этих условий очень важно для установки и пользования программой. Подскажите пожалуйста, какие модели отвечают этим требованиям?

    Кого бы позвать, чтобы срочно починить замок? С утра один горячий человечище очень метко, и со смаком отпинал мою входную железную дверь, и теперь я фактически не могу выйти из квартиры.     IP Meets Physical Reality
    An anonymous reader writes "When Google is clouding the borderline between web and the desktop, a much, much smaller project is blurring the border between the Internet and the physical reality: the newly released Contiki operating system version 2.2.1. Contiki runs on networked wireless sensors that are used for anything from road tunnel monitoring for fire rescue operations to collecting vital statistics from ice hockey players. These sensors typically have as little as a few kilobytes of memory and a few milliwatts of power budget — a thousandth of the resources of a typical PC computer — yet Contiki provides them with full TCP/IP connectivity. Meanwhile, San Francisco is monitoring parking spaces with wireless technology."

    Прохождение браузерами тестов SunSpider и ACID3
    Небольшой обзор-сравнение производительности обработки браузерами JavaScript (тест SunSpider), а также тестирование на совместимость со стандартами CSS (набор тестов ACID3).
    В итоге Google Chrome показал наилучшую производительность обработки JavaScript. А в тесте ACID3 Firefox 3.1 Alpha2 и Opera 9.60 beta показали наилучшие результаты, оба набрав по 85 баллов из 100.
