Networking as a job search tool
Attend any job search seminar, visit any decent job search site, talk to people - you'll know that networking is a key in successful job search.
From optimistic point of view, you are actually doing what is called “networking” by the virtue of doing the above. From realistic point of view, this is not enough.

You need to reestablish contact with people you worked with but vaguely remember or those you bumped into during the joyful years of employment at company-sponsored professional courses or conferences. You need to socialize with your kind at local networking events for technical / management / whatever-is-your-specialty folks (don’t forget to have a bunch of business cards handy). You have to join on-line networks such as Monster Networking that allows you to connect with people from the companies you worked for, people you went to school with, people with your kind of skill set, occupation and those found via keyword search.
For computer geeks the latter could be the best – virtual connections are something they are accustomed to while mingling with people after motivational speaker lecture at real-life networking event / during a lunch break at free-of-charge Microsoft course could be a bit of a stretch or just plainly less efficient.
Keep socializing this way or another. And don’t forget to attach the most recent version of your resume to your Seasons greetings e-mails (this leading to your e-mails being processed by a smart filter and directed to the Trash folder).
Well, analyze your options and pick top three that work for you. And don’t overdo it the way people will be as scared of you as they are of a vacuum cleaner sales person.
