Historical opposition to slavery, US
Information about opposition to slavery
in the pre-revolutionary
colonies that later formed the United States.
Some comments from me about this.
-
Condemnation of slavery by workers afraid of competition from slaves
is not the same thing as moral condemnation of slavery as an injustice.
-
Free workers concerned about unfair competition from unpaid slaves can make a difference in
the decision about whether to allow slavery. We can hope that it will do so. that includes
the case of convicts who are compelled nowadays to work in prison for wages so low that that
undercut and reduce the wages of free workers.
-
The existence in the British colonies of a minority who opposed slavery on moral grounds
is interesting, but they may have been too few to be seen as anything but a fringe group. It
is not impossible to end an injustice that is deeply embedded in society, but it may take a
struggle.
