The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed a news report published by The Nation newspaper on Sunday, insinuating that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo is planning to undermine President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, saying the relationship between both of them "remains very cordial"

A statement issued by the party after its National Working Committee (NWC) meeting yesterday described the publication as speculative and conjectural, adding that both leaders are committed to the peace and development of the country in general and PDP in particular.

The statement signed by the party's National Secretary, Chief Bernard Ezeh said the party was compelled to react to the publication 'because of its damaging influence to the public and in the overall interest of Nigerians in general and PDP members in particular."

He said: " the insinuation in the said publication is that the former President and PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR and the incumbent President and leader of our great party, Alh. Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, GCFR, are at loggerheads. Consequently, the mischievous publication concocts that the former plans to undermine the incumbent President through the following means; to ensure that PDP's convention does not hold; to keep Iwu and Ahmadu Ali in office, to scheme for the nullification of Presidential election and to search for fresh candidate in the event of nullification.

"For the avoidance of doubt, may it be unequivocally stated that the relationship between the former President and Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, and the incumbent President and Leader of our great party, Alh. Umaru Musa Yar'Adua is, to say the least, very cordial, and both leaders are committed to the peace and development of Nigeria in general and PDP United family, in particular."
