Twistors, strings, and the need for extra space dimensions?
For many years, proponents of superstring theory have been arguing that there are six or seven extra hidden dimensions to physical space. But recently, E. Witten (who has been a main innovator in string theory for about two decades) has put forward a new proposal according to which these extra dimensions may not be necessary. Instead, the strings are to inhabit twistor space, the space of light rays in four-dimensional space-time. We explore the intriguing geometry of twistor space and its physical relevance, and how strings can quite naturally find their home there.

Newton Polygons and a Theorem of Archimedes
Archimedes discovered the beautiful theorem that relates the area of a sphere to the area of a cylinder. Newton introduced polygons associated to the exponents in polynomials. We show how these are related and lead to surprising results including the iso-perimetric inequality which characterizes the circle.

Prof Roger Penrose will give a series of five lectures on Twistor Theory in the
Mathematical Institute, room L2 on Fridays at 10am starting 5th November and
continuing for the rest of term. The lectures are intended to be
introductory.

Везет Вам. Я как раз сейчас именно этими самыми твисторами вовсю занимаюсь,
с удовольствием бы послушал Пенроуза (первую лекцию особенно).
А вот здесь:

не совсем ясно, что он имеет в виду. На самом деле, twistorial string theory является
критической только в том случае, если содержит алгебру токов (т.ч. центральный заряд
материи равен 26+2=28), в противном случае петлевые амплитуды не определены.
Т.е. extra dimensions попросту заменены на current algebras - конструкция, в общем, нехитрая,
известная еще со старых добрых времен модели Гепнера и гетеротических струн.
Не в коня корм: хотел бы эти вещи знать, да не знаю, и поздно уже...
впрочем, могу попытатся записать аудио и спросить у кого-нибудь конспект...
у нас тут Хитчин есть, и я с одним из его студентов хорошо знаком. и у нас в колледже есть студент Пенроуза, я его тоже немножко знаю...
