Girls power continue. Ranetki.
Russian pop music may brag about uninterrupted streak of young female`s group, which replace each other on a big scene. We already met some of them such as Tatu or Propaganda. The next big thing was becoming to be a group Ranetki.
It was most promising line of ascendance for the this part of music. And they did their best. There was five of them. The leader and front was a drummer. Isn`t it cool the front singer was a young girl with drums and attitude. They all were great though with own perfect tracks, actually almost all of them had a decent song, in which they led. As the legend goes, they all were playing together from the very early years. Popular they became also very early in their high school or early college years. And this popularity started in a very unusual for the this country way.
And here some words should be said about russian movies and tv series. There was not solid business that puts out tons of production every year. Good movies were rare and accidental, there were a score of them but no more than that (e.g. above mentioned Piter FM, Progulka, or, let say, Zaimemsya Lubovyu). Ordinary movies didn`t exist. Mediocre and awful ones go straigt to the dumpster and nobody cared, they just didn`t make way to the theaters. Tv series were in this not prosperous condition too. The situation began to change very late, and since the big wave was moving to the conclusion, were issued a very few good tv series (e.g. women`s favorit Ne rodis krasivoy).
They procured to make an apperance on two good tv series Kadetstvo, as a soundtrack artist, and eponymous Ranetki, as an lead cast. These were two first and last successful russian serials for the youth, like Helene et les Garcons, or Beverly Hills 90210, or Hellcats, to be fully honest there was an early predecessor Prostye Istiny, but it was long ago gone to this time.
The gist of these series as of songs of Ranetki, need to mention that the great contribution to the Kadetstvo`s soundtrack was made as well by an artist named Mika Newton, so the gist was normal adolescent adventures, growing up, doing deeds, and of cause loves me loves me not. It was so normal, so healthy, without any deviations, that it literaly undermined the pillars of russian federation`s society. High school boys and girls with ordinary high school`s problems, no way, toward third season creators had to add some wiked twists.
By the way, the backdrop of Ranetki`s art was an urban quarters of apartment buildings, the same backdrop that brought huge success to the group Zveri. Also in this they there faithful descendants of an established narative of this big wave.
Their first album was another one eponym it`s called Ranetki and was issued in 2006. It is indispensable listening. In following years they issued some more albums, some tracks were pretty good, but the time had gone, the big wave ebbed.
So what went wrong. They were drawing a picture of a happy intresting schoolyears, when everyone may grow up into a good man or woman, to live an honest life, in a decent surroundings. And to some extent during this period of time this image seems if not pretty accurate but a possible in a future kind of reflection of reality.
But it had occured that there is no happy ending for russian youth. End if there is no silver lining, then there is no romantic dramedy. There is no point to be popular kid if nobody can become a respectable adult. Youngsters feel the false and would cruelly deride you and disdain, if you wear mask askew. Too many bad people in a lead roles in country, to trust anybody. And without any trust tv become a plain mockery. And students are just too smart and not too spoiled to put up with this deception. Eat your shit yourself, tv.
If there are no positive adult figures, then tv series and art as a whole cannot be light. It has to become more dark and heavy feeding youth`s angst, but that`s the rock area, there is no space for young girl group. So Ranetki (ranet – early ripening apples) came into being to late they blossomed but not bore fruits.
But it is not right to conclude so downliftingly depressed. They`d catched the wave nevertheless. And while we have young talented girls we would have an pop rock good loking sound loud crasy music. Wait, they`ve came, inevitably as a spring break. And that would be awesome.
