Dear god, LA is fucking insane. I'm here, and to my amazement... EVERY STEREOTYPE IS TRUE! Coffee shops around every corner with dudes sitting on their laptops smirking about their screenplays. All my roomates are "screenwriters", and they all have giant collections of screenwriting manuals and Syd Field books. They hold a screenwriters group on mondays, and they all sit there and tell each other how they would make each other's scripts better and how other movies are like their script in formula/structure. Nobody wants to talk about movies at all... and they all hang out at message boards looking at and honing in opinions of films... instead of actually watching movies and formulating the thoughts themselves. The other day one of the guys asked me 'whats your genre?'. No joke. I couldnt answer him, and he finally spewed out "My genre is gangster movies". None of these fuckers have even seen a movie over 20 years old. They are constantly dishing out advice to me about how to make it in 'the industry'. They talk down to me "if your gonna make it in this business, you need blah blah blah blah" because I am only 19 and I just moved here. Yet... none of them have done anything in said industry to be giving me advice. I miss home, i actually miss Bend, OR. I met a girl who talked with an accent... then... when i just happened to see her while I was job hunting.... it was gone. What the fuck is that? I also live next to a scientology church. This whole experience is very disheartening. I moved out here to find the cutting edge, the elite. I dont mean pretentious artsy cutting edge either. But what I have found in just 1 week of being here is very dissapointing. But at the same time it gives me hope, seeing what I'm up against. I wish i could post some sample writing.
