"The Shimmy was probably derived from a Nigerian dance, the Shika, taken to America by the black slaves. It was mentioned in the song 'The Bullfrog Hop' in 1909 by Perry Bradford. It became very popular in the USA 1910 to 1920, and became a national craze after Gilda Gray introduced it in the Zeigfeld Follies in 1922. She claimed the name comes from "chemise", having been asked by a reporter what she shook when dancing it. However, Mae West claims to have done it earlier, in the show 'Sometime' in 1919, although she was arrested for it only in 1926 in her stage show "Sex". Mae West's Shimmy was described by the singer Ethel Waters saying "she put her hands on her hips and worked her body fast without moving the feet" (Sadie, 1980, 17/257). Nowadays, the word means to shake the shoulders or hips rapidly, rotating them alternately left and right forward and back about a vertical axis.

" The shimmy goes way back to the "Haitian Voodoo " dances with the rapid shaking of hips and shoulders. It may have been known prior as the "Shimmy Sha-Wabble also written in Bradfords song "Rules and Regulations in 1911." The Shimmy was mentioned in sheet music called the Bulfrog Hop back to 1908 (probably referred to the shake and quiver version but Bradford called it the shimmy) and can be seen all the way back in an old edison film entitled 'Princess Rajah' dated 1902 but wouldn't become popular with white America till the 1920s with Gray and West."

Так-же это слово как-то соотносится с вибрациями и разрушением колёс самолёта.

Запомнилось по "Что?Где?Когда?" ещё советских времён - был такой вопросец. Ответом было - танец и конструкционные повреждения.

Плохо этот конкретный номер поставлен - танцевать начинают фактически только в самом конце.
А как феерически исполняли "Шимми" в конце 80-х И.Гулиева и В.Шляхтов...
