Today we did a short session before taking Yepa to see Dr McCoy. Yepa had made progress over night, having absorbed the lesson from yesterday. (This is called latent learning and is not uncommon in a dog’s learning process – when you finish a training session on a good note, rewarding Yepa for performing a desired behavior, she will process the learning involved between sessions and may perform better at the start of the next session than she did at the end of the previous one.)

Paw:

Yepa responded correctly to the verbal/visual cue Paw from a Sit, about 7 out of 9 times – the best rate so far. She didn’t have to do a warm up either – just went straight into giving a paw lift on cue. She then proceeded to offer her paw at various moments throughout the afternoon – in case that might get her what she wanted!

Great progress – she is really making the connection between doing something we want and getting something she wants.

She also hit a square plastic object with a paw on cue.

We also practiced Paw in the veterinary hospital waiting room and outside in the parking lot. Again – she did very well! Practicing in different places helps to strengthen a new skill.

Get It

Yepa picked up the Jolly Ball by the handle and brought it to me — about 8 times out of 15, with enthusiasm. This behavior is getting cleaner and more consistent.

Push

We worked with nose pushes to a square plastic lid, and then shifted to a small canvas treat pouch –against a wall in your room, then on top of the door opener near the front door. Yepa’s nose pushes were stronger overall, and she managed to push hard enough to open the door once.
