A source close to the Durban talks said the Europeans argued that if the transatlantic slave trade was to be branded a crime against humanity, so should the slave trade in the Indian Ocean.
The Arab-led slave trade in East Africa was on a smaller scale than across the Atlantic and analysts say African and Arab solidarity was preventing Africa from pursuing reparations on that front.
