Overview:
Come and learn from speaker Wayne B. Paugh and guest Chris Israel what the U.S. government has been and is doing to protect our IP outside the US. A brief update on patent reform in Congress will also be included.
Some facts and statistics:
The World Customs Organization and Interpol estimate the total global trade in illegitimate goods increased in 2004 to more than $600 billion.
U.S. companies alone lose an estimated $250 billion per year, costing 750,000 American jobs.
Nearly seven percent of the goods in the global marketplace are counterfeit.
According to industry estimates cited in USTR's 2005 Special 301 Report, in China alone, ninety percent of the music and movies sold are pirated.
On July 22, 2005 President Bush announced the creation of a senior position to help combat intellectual property (IP) violations. The Office of the Coordinator for International Intellectual Property Enforcement will be located at the Department of Commerce. The establishment of this office reinforces the Bush Administration's commitment to aggressively enforce intellectual property rights and will support ongoing Administration initiatives. |
