Government attorneys say Hinckley's recent interactions with the opposite sex are important because he has a history of not correctly perceiving the nature of his relationships with women who are not interested in him, resulting in disastrous consequences.

This was a generic "woman", like some people use a generic "man", to refer to a generic sentient member of a sexual species.

Definitely. You probably know that we all are of the female gender at a certain point of our development (while still inside the womb, of course). Then some of us graduate to the male status. ;-)
