⋅ There are three power grids in the United States: East, West and Texas. I think they are talking about electrical power.
⋅ New York blog.
Rite-Aid was closed, and customers were pissed because they had batteries but refused to let people in. Radio Shack was closed. Tarzian hardware was closed. Key Food was closed. Even Hagen-Dazs closed. But it was the mom-and-pop stores and the immigrant places that were open, being extremely accommodating, friendly and no price gouging that I saw. Almost all the pizza places were open. Lots of Thai and Chinese places were doing brisk business. Loads of people walking down the street with Mr. Softee ice creams and gelatos.
Plus a few more items up in the same blog. Cash rules (over credit cards). Stores are out of batteries. Street is noisy: honks, sirens. Mail delivered. Photo orders delayed. Newspapers sold out. No TV. Phone connection is up, but not all services (no voicemail on the Verizon network). Broadband internet unstable, dialup okay. Advice: keep your batteries fresh and flashlights working.

Интересно, а были ли призывы немедленно уволить министра энергетики?

Как и снять с работы президента Буша?

Вряд ли. Проблема там, если разбираться, в том, что никто не хочет выделять деньги на необходимые расходы, потому что это политически невыгодно, а увольнять Конгресс никто не соберётся. Впрочем, важно не то, что на самом деле, а то, как это воспринимается. А поскольку Буш и энергетические начальники не кажутся виноватыми, то и призывов нету.

Мне так кажется.

Представил себе такую фразу в духе того, что часто происходит в России, когда население, протестующее против отключения света и тепла, перекрывает автомобильные и железнодорожные магистрали:

"Негодующие ньюйоркцы перекрыли все транспортные магистрали города, протестуя против очереного отключения электричества и требуя уволить мэра, губернатора, министра энергетики и президента страны".

Ну, американцы привыкли считать, что они могут сами уволить выбранное лицо, так что буянить ни к чему. И действительно, вон в Калифорнии отзывают губернатора безо всяких буянств. :-)
