Unacknowledged New Weird
Here's a mystery for scholars. The Iron Dragon's Daughter was followed in 1994 by a Swanwick essay titled "In the Tradition ...". This essay, codifying in critical terms Swanwick's own modus operandi in this novel, argued for a new kind of fantasy, "hard fantasy," which would mingle true, fresh strangeness with mimetic toughness, and the piece seems to me to have laid down the "New Weird" blueprint in pretty solid form years before anyone else, almost prefiguring the work of China Mieville and his compatriots. Yet today Swanwick's name is generally absent from the New Weird rollcall. It seems a gaping omission in the history of the field.
