successfully changed the set of writing languages in my phone. It turns out one has to do something known as "debranding": the code ("product code") for the set of writing langauges is stored in the phone memory, and needs to be changed using certain piece of software.

In my case I had to replace the code 0534833 (apparently, Singapore/Malaysia/Indonesia, i.e. English/Malay/Chinese) with 0534849 ("Russian", that includes English, German, Romanian, Bulgarian, Ukranian, and Russian). Then proceeded as described in the link above.
