https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ukrainian_collaborationism_with_the_Axis_powers

Those Ukrainians who collaborated with the German occupiers did so in various ways including: participating in the local administration, in German-supervised auxiliary police, Schutzmannschaft, in the German military, and serving as concentration camp guards.

Professor Ivan Katchanovski, of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, writes that during the war the leadership of OUN B and UPA was heavily engaged in Nazi collaboration. He wrote that at least 23% of its leaders in Ukraine were in the auxiliary police, Schutzmannschaft Battalion 201, as well as in other police formations. 18% took part in training in Nazi Germany's military and intelligence schools in Germany and Nazi-occupied Poland, 11% served the Nachtigall and Roland Battalions, 8% in local administration during the Nazi occupation, and 1% in the SS Galicia Division. According to Katchanovski, the percentage of Nazi collaborators among the OUN-B and UPA leadership is likely higher than those numbers, since much data from early occupation is missing

Although majority of Trawniki men (or Hiwis) came from among the willing prisoners of war of Ukrainian ethnicity, there were also Volksdeutsche from Eastern Europe among them, valued because of their ability to speak Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and other languages of the occupied territories.[11][12] They became the only squad commanders. Trawniki men took major part in Operation Reinhard, the Nazi plan to exterminate Polish Jews. They served at extermination camps, and played an important role in the annihilation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (see the Stroop Report) among other ghetto uprisings.

Trawniki men (German: Trawnikimänner) were deployed from Trawniki to all major killing sites of the "Final Solution" – it was their primary purpose of training. As guards, they took an active role in the extermination of Jews at Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka II. They conducted large-scale massacres in Warsaw (three times), Częstochowa, Lublin, Lvov, Radom, Kraków, Białystok (twice), Majdanek as well as Auschwitz, not to mention Trawniki itself.

Wiesenthal Center Blasts Ukrainian Honor For Nazi Collaborator

January 28, 2010

WIESENTHAL CENTER BLASTS UKRAINIAN HONOR FOR NAZI COLLABORATOR

“It is surely a travesty when such an honor is granted right at the period when the world pauses to remember the victims of the Holocaust on January 27,” says SWC official.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today condemned Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko for posthumously awarding the “Hero of Ukraine,” one of the country’s highest honors, to Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist leader whose followers killed thousands of Jews and others during World War II.
