I think when people say that consciousness is a product of the brain function, they mean that by destroying the brain that particular consciousness will be destroyed. This definition avoids most of the semantic catches.

and there is a good chance he is right, at least if the brain shuts down in a particular order (feelings of being at one with the universe, loss of personal boundaries, etc.)
