Снежная Богоматерь
Попалось мне недавно вот эта Мадонна. Стало интерсно узнать, что за Чудо изображено на этой картине. Оказалось, что история эта произошла летом, впрочем, почему бы ее не рассказать зимой? :)

Церковь Санта Мария Маджоре - одна из самых первых церквей Рима и самая большая среди всех церквей, посвященных Богоматери. С ее основанием связана интересная история.
Она рассказывает о том, что римлянину Иоану и его жене во сне явился образ Девы Марии, повелевавший построить в честь нее церковь в том месте, где на следующий день выпадет снег. Они рассказали об этом Папе Либерию. И на следующее утро, 5 августа ( 352 г), выпал снег именно на Эсквилинский холм (Mount Esquiline). И Папа Римский решил, что это знак свыше и приказал построить базилику Санта Мария делла Неве (Basilica di Santa Maria della Neve ), в переводе означающую как Снежная Дева Мария. Само же строительство базилики было закончено в 5 веке во времена Папы Сикста III. Базилика много раз перестраивалась, окончательное изменение было в 1750 году архитектором Фердинандо Фуга. Колокольня базилики составляет 75 метров в высоту. Она была достроена в 14 веке. Внутри базилики все создано в изящном и прекрасном палеохристианском стиле. Потолок для базилики проектировал сам Джулиано да Сангалло. Замечательный пол базилики был создан в 12 веке.
5 августа до сих пор отмечается день Богоматери Снежной.

The Dream of the Patrician. The Patrician Juan and His Wife Reveal His Dream to Pope Liberius. The composition was executed for the church of Santa-Maria la Blanca. A legend says that in 352 the Roman Pope Liberius saw in his dream Madonna, who ordered him to build a temple for her at the place where snow would fall. In the morning the Pope had visitors: a Roman patrician Juan, with his wife, who said that he had seen Madonna in his dream and now he and his wife were ready to contribute their money to the construction of her new temple.

(The figures before the Madonna and Child are the Apostle, St. Matthias [who replaced Juadas], for certain because he carries the battle-ax which is his symbol; and St. Charles Borromeo-----I think-----because of the likeness of the profile to actual known images of the Saint. Our manifest does not provide these figures' identity. St. Charles was a central, towering figure of the Counter-Reformation period, and the artist primarily executed his pieces as a Counter-Reformation work.)
