Probably constructed from sheet of roofing copper, this unicorn weather vane from New England dates to the late 18th century. The Centaur Archer weather vane cost $16 when it was made in 1860. It is molded copper with gold paint. Image courtesy of Heritage Museums & Gardens , Sandwich, Mass.

A.L. Jewell & Co., Waltham, Mass., likely made this molded copper Horse Jumping Through Hoop weather vane, 1852-1867. The 17-inch-long horse has a verdigris surface and the original copper rod hoop, which is often lost. This scarce vane sold at auction for $140,000 in February 2007.
