Mission Statement
Sonsorol State Islands and people are unique culturally, socially and environmentally to the rest of the Republic of Palau. By nature, our islands are tiny in size and located farther away from neighboring developed islands. In today's world of new and improved technology, the islands are even farther away due to lack of good communication technology and reliable transportation. Nevertheless, we love our islands and its culture. We honor our ancestors who first settled in the islands and called them our home.
· We envision preservation of our cultural values and tradition of family respect and community of people who live in harmony with each other.
· We envision protection and preservation of our islands' environmental integrity and its limited natural resources that people on the islands will live self sufficiently and in harmony with the environment.
· We envision more people wanting to live on the islands with feeling of security in health care services and education for their children.

Long Term Goals:(1 - 5 years)
Goal # 1. Improved health care services.
a) Nurse stationed on islands
b) Medical doctor visit islands on a quarterly basis
c) Most needed medications supply available at the dispensary.
d) Develop a rotating nurse program
e) Construct dispensary on Pulo Anna
f) Decrease medical evacuation by strengthening preventive health care
Goal # 2. Improved Education for our children
a) Recruit Better teachers
b) School renovation and extension for library and computer lab
c) Integrate agriculture in school curriculum
d) Encourage school participation in national events.
e) Integrate cultural education in school.
f) Solicit support for computer education in the school curriculum and activities
Goal # 3. Improved & reliable communications technology.
a) Purchase & install phone patch to existing radio system
b) Repair and maintain existing radio phone & radio fax systems
c) Look into better and affordable communication technology, e.g e-mail, etc.
Goal # 4. Improved & reliable transportation system
a) Contract with Hatohobei for quarterly field trips
b) Contract for transportation of CIP construction materials and equipment.
c) Contract for transportation for Housing Program materials and equipment.
d) Ultimately, we need a bigger and better boat that can be for multipurpose use perhaps for tourism, passenger and cargo transportation to Sonsorol State islands, and for chartering.
Goal # 5. Develop Sustainable Economic Development
a) Develop an economic development commission to research and develop plans for sustainable economic development activities.
b) Contract experts for assistance in development of Agriculture and Aquaculture.. $15,000.00
Goal # 6. Preservation of Cultural and Traditional Activities
a) Encourage gardening of local produce
b) Preservation of local produce
c) Promote and encourage traditional arts & crafts
Goal # 7. Secure solar power to all homes and public facilities
a) Cooperate with the OEK Committee on efforts
b) Secure funding for repair and maintenance of existing power units
c) Negotiate for use of $116,144.73 remaining balance for the Sonsorol State Energy Production Project RPPL 4-40 (FY'96) to fund for energy systems to newly constructed homes and facilities in the Sonsorol State Islands.
d) Contract Australian experts to reassess and correct deficiencies with units in Sonsorol state islands particularly Sonsorol Island.
Goal # 8. Introduce and Construct use of Composting Toilets …………………$42,645.00
Composting toilets are the most suitable method of dealing with human waste in areas with hgih water tables, such as the islands of Sonsorol State. Unlike pit toilets (currently in use) and septic tanks, composting toilets discharge zero pollutants into soil and groundwater. Additionally, unlike septic systems and water-seal toilets, the composting toilets use no water. This is an important consideration in our islands, which have very limited water resources.
Goal # 9. Local Marine Communication Equipment …………………………….$3,204.00
This equipment is proposed for safety and convenience of state employees during field trip operations, other state marine projects and for local fishermen.
Goal #10. NEW & IMMEDIATE: Repair of concrete water tank on Sonsorol Island………………. $2,000.00
Currently seeking funding assistance from the OERC Program.
Goal #11. OLD but need to be RESOLVED: Pension Plan debt….…………..$143,000.00
